552633 2007-05-24 05:59:00 Anyone have any tips on disassembling an NEC LaVie notebook? Got one here I am trying to repair and need to get to the DC socket at the rear - but this thing seems to be screwed down like Fort Knox and I don't want to break anything.
Have taken all screws out from the plastic casing underneath - and have managed to remove the plastic cover in front of the keyboard which has given me access to the HD etc - but from here on I am at a loss as to how to proceed.

552634 2007-05-24 06:09:00 Ummm. Should I tell you? ;) Laptop manufacturers don't like people doing that. It's a pretty good way to get a guarantee cancelled.

But if it's your own, and the guarantee has expired, and you take all risk on yourself ...

Try running your thumbnail around the seam between the halves of the case. You will need to try a few times at various angles but in time and with patience you will unhook the first of the wedge latches which hold the halves together, and rest will be easy. Don't use force.

It might not be as bad as the Apple iBook I opened for a friend a while ago. There were 40 odd screws with different diameters, lengths, and heads to remove to get to the hard disk. Getting it back together was interesting, too.

Replacing the DC connector might be a risky operation too. (I saw that Apple actually have that as a replaceable item, on a cable). The problem can be in desoldering it from the motherboard without damaging the MB. I'm not sure whetheI dislike more SMD sockets or through-soldered ones. :(

552635 2007-05-24 06:16:00 Thanks for that Graham. This notebook is well and truly out of any guarantee period.

I'll persevere on with the destruction.. oops I mean disassembly.

552636 2007-05-24 07:20:00 There used to be a website that had model-specific instructions for pulling apart laptops. I don't think this (repair4laptop.org) is it, but you may find some helpful tips. :) Jen (38)
552637 2007-05-24 07:34:00 If you Google enough you might be able to find a diagram. There are a few laptop repair sites with instructions on various laptop brands/models.

I find laptops usually have screws hidden in awkward places, like covered up with little rubber bits, under stickers, under the screen hinges and so on.

552638 2007-05-24 07:40:00 That's true ... often the screws holding the lid and screen surround together are behind nearly invisible rubber plugs.

The main rule to remember is "never force it". If it's not coming, there's always a reason. The main case usually splits without too many "totally hidden" screws, but occasional culprits are under the rubber feet
