| 552194 | 2007-05-26 13:02:00 | I am too getting I/O Device Error but here the problems are even more confusing . I have no idea how to solve this, and I have spent at least three months, 2 hours every day, trying to locate this issue, and not getting anywhere . I have 6 drives in my system . 5 Western Digital SATA harddrives - 3x320 GB and 2x250 GB, and 1 Maxtor One Touch III 300 GB firewire/usb harddrive . 1 250 GB drive is partitioned 2 x 75 GB & 1 x 100 GB . Due to the uncertainties around Vista, I haven't gone as far as to remove/replace earlier version of Windows XP Professional, so I am running Dual Boot option with Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit and Windows XP professional . In case one of the OS's catch fire, I can still load everything on the second and repair the damage . I have no issue what so ever in Windows XP professional . All drives and files are reading/writing normally . In Vista I get i/o device error on the harddrives, and it randomly jumps from one drive to another, and there are no rules to it, as far as I can see . If I number all the drives including the partitions from 1-8, where Drive 1 is where the OS is installed, I get i/o device error on 3, 7 and 8 constantly, but only one at a time . After one reboot, it will be fine a short while, and then one drive will get the error . Statistically it has been about 60 % of times on drive 7, 15% of times on drive 8 and 25 % of the times on drive 3 . Drive 7 & 8 are 320 GB SATA drives and drive 3 is 300 GB Maxtor One Touch III . This error does not exist at all in XP and I have run several check disk and even at one time emptied the contents of the drive into other drives and formatted with both FAT and NTFS filesystems, without getting any closer to solving the issue . The normal systems are: Not able to copy, read or write, view or even transfer via FTP any file or other contents . Sometimes some files will transfer, and some won't that are located on the drive . There doesn't seem to be any logic rule to it, but there must be, since this is a computer, and there must be a logic pattern behind it . Right? Anyways, I have just given up, and now started search for a solution on the web and different forums . I am admitting defeat and now wish the people here or microsoft help me with this issue . A comment to some of the solutions provided by others . I also get i/o device error in System Protection Tab in advanced system properties, and no drives come up . The issue extends both to regular SATA-drives in addition to USB-drives, no matter how large . Allthough, the issue seems to be most common on drives with size bigger than 250 GB . I cannot confirm this last statement, as the statistics here are mostly based on feeling and not tested 100 % . I hope some one can issue a fix to this problem, as it is causing me great deal of frustration . I am serioulsy considering migration to Linux very soon if this issue cannot be solved . |

| 552196 | 2007-05-27 02:25:00 | Sounds like a controller error, are the drivers for the SATA controller signed by MS? | SolMiester (139) | ||
| 552197 | 2007-05-27 02:43:00 | Or if your ISP has a newgroups server, find out what it is log into it. And download the available subscriptions. Then type in Vista, select a NG, add it and post. |
