mac users seem to act like there is no ilife equivalents for windows too, and who said there wasn't quality AND quantity? i prefer to have a choice
and i've never had security nor viruses attacking my machine, it's really not that hard to avoid

You have to pay for the stuff that comes bundled with Vista and it still doesn't work as smoothly. There is no equivalent that comes bundled with XP and hunting around for open source or freebies defeats the idea of making it simple and easy to use for the average punter who doesn't know how to avoid malware which would include about 90% of the PC using population.

552710 2007-05-25 11:57:00 freebies? a mac costs so much more one could justify the cost of paying...

you're right about 90% of computer users no having a clue

Glad I got 1 thing right in your opinion. ;)
The other one depends on how important or relevant your tools are for your job.

552712 2007-05-29 02:06:00 Update: Ended up with a secondhand Acer (couple of months old and still under waranty).

It's more of a desktop replacement than a truly portable unit - time will tell if I made the right choice as I'm not 100 % sure.

Specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0Ghz)
1GB RAM
120GB HDD
All usualy connectivity extras like USB, bluetooth, WiFi.
17" WXGA TFT
Windows XP SP2
Carry Bag.

$1800 incl. GST and Postage.

I've since been into DSE and seen smaller, but similarly specced machines for similar money on special, but the cheapest price on this actual unit I could find was around $2200 to $2400.

Will let you know what I think when it arives.

Cheers for all the help.

552715 2007-05-29 04:56:00 Ha! would have bought a mac book, but could only afford 13" model - too small. echothreezero (6612)

Not quite, plod. I am actually genuinely interested to know what PC software apps echothreezero will be using in his multimedia endeavors
Considering that there is a semi reasonable range of free stuff in the DV editing dept and good free stuff like audacity for audio, then there is the fairly affordable stuff like Ulead Studio and Nero to name a couple, and then there is the serious pro stuff from Adobe and Maya $$$.

Unfortunately the 13" MacBook is too small for multimedia and the MacBook Pro 15" is probably ideally suited regarding size but the price puts it up iwith the pros who can afford it. The MacBook is ok if your a student at uni though.

Looking forward to reading about the results.
