552444 2007-05-23 11:19:00 Thanks winmacguy. Good valid reasons. It's always a worry, but for me, I'll give the extended a miss on this item. I must admit however, I did buy an extended for an LCD TV, and that was for peace of mind too. It was also because it cost me a lot more as well. Less hassle, as you say.

Well if you do by an "affordable"PC laptop minus the warranty, don't expect the trouble free ride to last the lifespan of the laptop (unless you have your fingers crossed and touch wood at time of purchase-good luck charms:))

552445 2007-05-23 11:21:00 Thanks everyone for participating in my thread. It's strange really. I have absolutely no difficulty in deciding what I need for a desktop, but laptops are so hard. I think, for me, it's that inability to pick and choose components. Can I throw a couple links at you? Which is the better laptop, and what should I choose? Do you know of something better?:

For me, it looks as if the compaq is a great buy. But, I've been warned away from compaq many times. Same for Dick Smith's, but they are handy, even if I know more than the staff about most of their gear.

Please advise. Thanks once again.

IMO, laptops are about portablitiy and connectivity, so light with as many forms of connection, Bluetooth, Wi/Fi, usb galore and a decent burner. Wide screen are okay but watch out for native resolutions on some of the panels, they are too high so the pitch is too small meaning the type is hard to read.
IE, the Toshiba @ ascent.

I have had a couple of client buy the ASUS from DSE of late, seems a good little unit for the price with all of the connectivity currently available and a webcam/mic built in.

Not a concern. I appreciate your concern though. As a last resort, a disputes tribunal works wonders. It's just a hassle, that's all. The Consumers Guarantee Act is there for a purpose. People just don't use it, because they don't realise how effective it is.

552447 2007-05-23 11:41:00 SolMiester. Thanks.

Just took another look at DSE. Found this (hadn't seen it before) Asus Z92J Notebook. I see it has a Core2 Duo! 5500. Only 512mb ram and XP home, but I can buy more ram later. It is at the top of my budget though and I suppose XP home can be lived with. An 8 cell battery - Is that good?

Anybody familiar with this model? I like that it's a Core2 Duo. Any thoughts?

You strike me as a guy who likes to to do things the hard way just for kicks. Your not a paralegal or lawyer by any chance?
With regards to RAM, as long as your only running XP with one or two other apps, 512MB should be ample. I had 512MB on my old PC for Photoshop and InDesign and that was plenty sufficient.

No, but I don't give up a good fight.

Thanks for the comment about the Ram. 512mb is fine, the Chip is more important. I don't expect to be multitasking much. Bucket loads of Firefox Tabs is about the worst I get. How does that Asus Z92J look to you winmacguy?

I have to get some shut eye now. I'll check in on this tomorrow morning. Thanks
everyone. Please keep it coming, good and not so good welcome. No offence, it's all good.

Personally I'm not much of a pro regarding the hardware specs of a PC laptop, I'm a Mac user myself so I can't offer you my opinion on that Asus. Good luck with the advice from the other posters though.
