552108 2007-05-23 22:41:00 Try formatting the drive.

Start > control panel > performance and maintenance > administrative tools > computer management > disk management

then right click on your new drive and select format.

552112 2007-05-24 00:04:00 Had too many of both Hitachi and Samsung drives fail and would prefer not to use them again.
I've also had Seagate and WD drives fail of cause but the failure rate of them is much lower.
In fact I can't remember the last time I had a Seagate drive fail.

Seagate's the best. I would put WD next, but it's a fair way back. I have had a lot of expreience with HDDs, and have found Hitatchi, Samsung and toshiba to be among the worst.

552113 2007-05-24 00:56:00 Yes the Hard Drove is being detected at Hardware level but Windows doesn't know that . It must be formatted first .

I use ACRONIS disk Director as it is easier and I have it, but I am 99% sure (dont shoot me if I am wrong) that if you go to the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management .

You should see the disk there . Right click on the correct drive and select format .

Reboot when complete and it should be there .

Just make sure you don't format the wrong drive . :badpc:

These comments on reliability run counter to many postings on overseas forums .
Didn't NZ get any of the Seagates that had spindle motor faults?

People dealing with 1000s of drives monthly report little difference in brands overall with each brand having occasional glitches . IBM had a bad run with the GXP series before quitting the consumer drive market but Hitachi are now OK . Fujitsu had a big problem caused by the supplier of the controller chip .

Have you considered that if you are a normal user getting lots of drive problems, then it's something local like the distibutor's courier plays basketball with the parcels or the way you handle them .

Postings on forums aren't a reliable indication.
And I have and still deal with various brands of HDD.

Seagate wins.
