2007-05-24 09:53:00 | Always pushing the mac barrow.. hah - just joshing with ya - I would, but 1) I can't afford one, 2) When I say multimedia I mean play music and watch videos, so its fine, and 3) Although I love using my sisters brand new $5k macbook, I can't help but feel like the case and keyboard feels a little cheap?? Or maybe thats just me. OK so going with XP. Looking at $45 to up to 2GB, $100 for 1.73 (Core Duo) CPU (instead of 1.6 Core Duo) Or I can save $150 and downgrade to 1.86 Dothan CPU. What say you experts?

2007-05-24 10:09:00 | I s there anything wrong with XP MCE? Nothing at all. MCE is just the media centre software running on top of XP pro. one thing to note: HPs usually come with Norton antivirus. Get rid of it.

No problem, I was just looking at your requirements and considered that to be a possible solution since it pretty much fills the all the requirements of an on board multimedia setup. The look and feel could just be an opinion thing considering they are one of the best designed laptops on the market. I agree that unfortunately in NZ price is an issue. Your sister has a top of the line MacBook Pro. The MacBooks are the "lower" end student version (recently updated) Good luck with specing your XP setup. |

2007-05-24 11:14:00 | Dell currently have a Class Action law suite against them in the US Details here. www.consumeraffairs.com Would suggest a Toshiba even though they are a thick clunky looking laptop.

2007-05-24 11:30:00 | I wouldn't bother upgrading the CPU - I doubt you would notice the difference. I presume the graphics is onboard and it doesn't have a seperate graphics chip. That is the reason I would upgrade the RAM. | Tukapa (62) | |
2007-05-24 11:33:00 | if only mac wasn't so expensive:rolleyes: sounds like an opinion to me:p They are about half the price in the US. Just a pity we aren't stateside. :o It would appear to be the opinion of a lot of people.... www.nationaldesignawards.org XP should be pretty snappy on 1GB of RAM. I had it with 512MB on my old machine with Photoshop and it was fine.
