552510 2007-05-24 07:27:00 What's InDesign like, winmacguy? I am hoping to do a publishing course later this year and that is one piece of software we have to buy and use.

Well despite becoming more bloated with age, it still rocks. At this stage I can only speak for CS2. The bulk of the shortcuts crossover easily from Photoshop. I had to use Quark 6.5 a lot in my last Mac op job and despite its improvements from Quark 4.2 which I learned on (yuk!) it still blows goats in the keyboard shortcut department. I actually prefer to use the latest version of Freehand - which no longer exists than use Quark. However Quark is still a leaner application than InDesign.

If you do do a publishing course and can afford it, get yourself a MacBook (at student rates) rather than a PC laptop. InDesign rocks under OS X, as do most other tools in the publishing world, especially Photoshop. I will be interested to see how InDesign CS3 goes.

552511 2007-05-24 07:32:00 Even if they had one time zone, surely they could show what time it is right now in that country? The point is, I tried at many different times and on at least one of those occasions I should have got it when it was open. The fact the number I was eventually given by the reseller was different from the one on their website is a concern. And I'll put my hand up, what's UTC?

But it still doesn't explain their lack of action regarding my emails and technical support requests. I am pretty sure that said something about being contacted within 24 hours... 48 hours later I'm still waiting.

Thanks winmacguy - but I've just bought a new PC (chose that as all my software was for PC) and despite coveting a Mac again (I still have my old LC475!), I can't justify the expense right now. Maybe when I get into it in a big way I can, but right now I'm a poor student!

No problem. No doubt you will be able to experience the side by side comparison in class at some stage. Its not that InDesign or Photoshop are necessarily faster on a PC or Mac, more that the Mac is more stable when being thrashed all day that you start to notice the differences in productivity especially once you become familiar with the Mac OS and those project deadlines start closing in. You don't have any virus problems either- just a few file format or font issues to deal with.
I currently have my old PC version of InDesign 2 and Photoshop 7 loaded and running on XP Pro in Parallels on my iMac.

LC- thats going back a few years (like 17:eek: )

552513 2007-05-24 08:09:00 I've got a "champagne" coloured Mac Plus, with 4MB. Will that do? Graham L (2)

I bought it new the year I began my journalism studies in 1994 so it's not quite that old! But close! Never gave me any trouble and all I had to do was replace the battery. I miss one of the games that was loaded on it when I got it - Jewelbox - it was like Tetris, etc but had nice relaxing music!

552516 2007-05-24 20:58:00 Still 13 years old, pretty ancient for a computer. That was back in the early days of Pagemaker which was owned by Aldus back then I think.
They have come a long way since then.

Don't laugh, I still have the original disks for Pagemaker too! I really liked it, much nicer than Publisher in my opinion!

I better give up on the list of old things I've got before you peg me as a pensioner! (I'm still young enough to ride a motorcycle!)

It's not hard for Pagemaker to be better than Publisher, originally created by Aldus then sold to Adobe, it was designed for desktop publishing before MS knew what desktop publishing was. Fortunately Adobe came up with InDesign to replace it and compete with Quark.

Publisher is unlikely to ever catch on in the publishing industry.

552519 2007-05-26 12:32:00 I bought Publisher years ago as it wasn't that expensive but I never really liked it. I only have it now because it came with Office 2003.

I hope InDesign isn't expensive - I'll qualify for student prices - because I better start saving if it's a must-have for my course!
