552097 2007-05-22 18:01:00 I think I killed my harddrive by unplugging it without first stopping from the taskbar

Hmm never knew it could murder the harddrive that way.

Ever had such a problem?

Wish someone could let me know why the harddrive stopped working...I like answers!

I am quite sure you didn't kill the drive by doing that. Using stop on the taskbar is to simply make sure that all data has been written and has nothing to do with the hardware.

If you unplug with "stopping" all you risk is the very small possibility that a part of your data has not been flushed from the cache and may be corrupted but personally I have never had a problem. I do try and remember to "STOP" it but at times I forget.

Re HD choice. I concur with the others SEAGATE or WD are the best choice. I have had one Seagate die but then that was the only brand I used then so it would have to be. Currently I am using both.

The type of drive you buy must be the same as your enclosure. What was the model of your HITACHI. From that we can tell you what type of drive you should look for but my bet it is IDE.

It states ATA/IDE so yeah its ATA

Not sure but I heard SATA was faster but my dad says something about that it fits different and requires an adaptor or something?

552099 2007-05-23 07:42:00 I didn't drop the HD or anything it just didn't turn on when I plug the power back into the usb casing...How could it suddenly die without a reason? Ninjabear (2948)

how does a fridge die without a reason? How long is a peice of string? Why does my Pitbull bite someone? Why is the sky blue?

552101 2007-05-23 08:17:00 ... Yes, SATA is theoretically faster, and yes, it does have a different interface to IDE... go ask Google The_End_Of_Reality (334)
552102 2007-05-23 09:01:00 Is this drive ok?

two times half its length

ask a dog trainer, but depends on dog, it's upbringing/nature and what person was doing

nitrogen. and that distance haze that makes things far away seem grey is due to air moisture:p

now would i be right in saying that buying a sata HDD to be used in an enclosure, connecting to a pc via USB, would be no faster than an ide drive? seems like that pesky usb connection is is a nasty bottleneck.

I will tell you something... I have a Seagate 320GB SATA II drive and I connect that via USB, it is not noticable... The_End_Of_Reality (334)
552106 2007-05-23 22:33:00 Ok

So I received the harddrive today and screw the usb casing in.Plug it in the Computer. The computer detected the harddrive but it doesn't show up in My computer or windows explorer. The harddrive isn't there.Do I need to assign a letter?

When I go to device manager I can clearly see the drive located there and it says that the device is working properly.

Any ideas whats happening?

Thanks
