552639 2007-05-24 03:04:00 I've always been a city boy but I'm about to go country.

I have Broadband via Telecom but will be too far away from the exchange to continue.

I've grown accustomed to Broadband and would hate to go back to dial up so....

what are the alternatives available to me?
Bryan (147)
552640 2007-05-24 03:11:00 That would depend on your signal availability. At worst you could be stuck with dial up. A more expensive option would be satellite. Possibly Woosh- depend on signal strength.

In NZ the further you move away from a built up area the greater your limitations on choice for internet speed become.- things get much slower.

552641 2007-05-24 03:45:00 There are only 3 choices.
1)Wireless - but you may still be too far out.

2)Woosh.
From what I've seen helping people with it, speed sucks, the helpdesk sucks.

3)Satellite.
Orcon, Natcom, Farmside, Iconz all provide it.
So does Wireless Nation.

WN is the cheapest/fastest. Their helpdesk is small but good.

which one of these are you doing the install with? And what is it like?

552643 2007-05-24 04:51:00 Actually the Woosh helpdesk has improved a lot since they handed it to another company I think. beeswax34 (63)
552644 2007-05-24 06:09:00 Sorry, but my experience with Woosh still sucks. They closed my account that I was still paying for without any warning, and did not get back to me as promised when I had an issue of emails bouncing.

If they have upgraded their customer service systems then they have a LONG way to go.

As for broadband in rural areas, getting the right answer out of Telecom can be a mission.

I have a friend who lives in an isolated beach settlement up north. When I first checked on the Xtra website, it said "Yes! Broadband is available in your area". I then contacted them only to be told "Sorry, it's not available."

They couldn't explain the discrepancy between the truth and what their website suggested.

Now, a year down the track, I have contacted them again, and lo and behold - broadband is now available there!

WN.

I could be accused of bias but it was actually the other way around, I started doing the installs after I checked them out and found their helpdesk helpful, their pricing good and the speed good.

The lowest speed has been 1488mbps, there is a bit of variation with traffic etc.
The highest was 1920mbps.

But should someone want to check for themselves they can PM me and I'll give them the contact details for a lady here who has it.
She has told me she is happy to provide feedback if anyone wants.

She now has 1 PC and 1 PS3 attached to it using the net.

Thats the reason I brought it up. I was counting on you being honest. I think there maybe 2 or 3 people on the forum that has used some of the other stuff besides woosh
