I assume he means the colour cartridge is low and this prevents any printing at all, even just B&W

Try removing the colour cartridge and giving it a shake. It may remove the low level warning and allow you to print B&W for a while.

Because their is a heat issue in the print heads the machine will not allow you to not have color cartridges in there, as the flowing ink keeps the heads from burning out.

Even when printing black only you will still use ink from the colour cartridges.

552598 2007-05-24 01:23:00 the colour black is made up of obviously the black cartridge but in colour printers it has a small amount of coloured ink in there too,
Water will not work unless he wants his printing smeared and watch smoke rise from his machine.

5% Yellow will give a rich black. Generally that is the only other colour that is added to Black, well in a 4 colour print process. In a 3 colour printer with an RGB catridge, there is no true Black present, only the Red Green and Blue which are mixed accordingly.

552600 2007-05-24 03:14:00 Hi, May be of some help - mine is an Epson CX3500 and I had the same problem, using a lot of colour when only printing being done was b/w. If you open Printer/Properties/General/Printing Preferences/ Advanced/Continue/Tick Black Ink Only/OK and close. That, in my case, had my printer using less colour but still some. That is assuming your Printer menu is the same or similar. I had to have at least some colour ink in the colour cartridges for printer to work.

Thanks for that Info. I always wondered. PJ

552602 2007-05-24 04:22:00 Check if your printer, if there are 3rd party ink available.
If you have 4 ink cartridge in total you can get 4 diff tone of black ink.
It gives you much better b/w prints that way.
