553738 2007-05-28 09:08:00 bordernet? (they took over ihugs old sat)

btw are those 1 way sat or 2 way sat?

553739 2007-05-28 10:09:00 Nah, I haven't counted any of those like Bordernet because as they say:

How does it work?
Subscribers connect to the Internet via a telephone line modem connection and run a special data acceleration program known as Tellique. Tellique then sends Internet requests for data that utilizes broadband speeds like web sites, downloads and email to the satellite earth station for delivery back to your PC via a satellite data path.

The others all use Ipstar and its satellite both ways, no phone lines or dial up modems involved at all.

The people interested in this sort of thing are rural people with no other options and complete rubbish dial-up, not just normal dial-up even.

So having to still use it is pointless.

Also all of the above use exactly the same dishes, satellite and modem.

553740 2007-05-28 13:13:00 Wireless Nation 5GB plan looks hard to beat...

Or am I missing something ...

553741 2007-05-28 23:32:00 i thought bordernet offered 2 way sat as well ?

also it might pay to check which companies are simply reselling another companies services. i know there is 4-5 that are simply a resell.

553742 2007-05-29 01:35:00 At those speeds is it really worth changing to satellite based internet. surely, most people get at least 2Mbps? Then of course there's the cost issue, it's pretty high all things considered.

I'm on a no cap plan and I get between 2-3Mbps (I'm about 4.5km's from the exchange)

I have no problems with the speed I get even though it's not anywhere near what Telescum promised. Besides most ISP's are dumping their no cap plans so I'm not willing to give that up right now, at least not without good reason or a replacement "perk".

I'm on a full speed/128 plan, no data cap for $49.95!!!

Pretty good deal as far as I'm concerned.

Cheers

553743 2007-05-29 01:44:00 As pctek has said - The people interested in this sort of thing are rural people with no other options.

What makes you think most ISPs are dumping no cap plans, I don't see any evidence of that.

What ISP is giving you no data cap for that price.

There was a thread on F1 recently, about 2 maybe 3 weeks ago about another ISP dumping their NO CAP plans, I inferred from this that most ISP's were dumping there NO CAP plans due to issues with the Telescum network not being able to sustain the load of users on it.

What ISP is giving you no data cap for that price.
I'm with Quicksilver, but they are now owned by Woosh. Prior to the Woosh takeover I was on a 30GB plan, then there was the "unleashing" by Telescum and I was "upgraded" to a no cap plan... fullspeed/128.

I usually average about 15 - 20GB... downloading Linux distros, listen to lots of streaming audio/video etc.

553745 2007-05-30 07:50:00 you did receive your email about quicksilver/woosh killing the no cap and making it into 10Gb while keeping the same price?

don't want to get a nasty surprise in a few days time
actually they sent me a reminder email about how I'll be capped to 10Gb..too bad I just called them telling them to close my account :p
