553721 2007-05-27 22:32:00 As several people lately have pointed out the benefit of Open Office I decided to look at it again. I found I had removed it from my computer some years ago but the PCWorld disks for Dec 2006 and June 2006 both had the latest version. I found the Dec disk would not work, but I did get it to work using explorer to access the disk. June 2006 worked fine straight off. But neither gave me the program - after installing, apparently with no problems, all I had was an shortcut icon on my desktop taking me to a load of installation icons on another display. I tried using these with winzip - no joy - all advice welcome!
I did uninstall my first attempted installation before trying the other disk.

553722 2007-05-27 22:48:00 Have you tried looking under all programs/open office 2.2? I think thats what it should be under if it's the latest version. wratterus (105)

553725 2007-05-29 05:47:00 Well I have got Open Office running - thanks chaps. Now I have another problem. In MSWorks spreadsheets I am used to using Ctrl/: (2 key entry) to enter the date, and Ctrl/shift/: (3 key entry) to enter the time.

I haven't been able to find an equivalent in Open Office and although it is a very long time since I used MS OFFICE I seem to remember having a lot of difficulty there too.
Obviously there must be a simple method - what is it please?

Sure have Speedy. With a fine tooth comb but found nothing. I also think that there is nothing in the MSWorks help file about the commands I use on a daily basis for date and time entering - I found them by pure accident years ago.

553728 2007-05-29 06:33:00 Does this list of OO Keyboard Shortcuts (documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/0313CG-KeyboardShortcuts.pdf) have what you need?
("open office shortcuts" to Google will find more).

In general, you'll get much better information for open source software on the Internet . "Help" provided with the software is much harder to keep uptodate than online stuff. In this case, there's a documentation.openoffice.org site .

Thanks Graham.
But no I didn't find anything that helped. I have another problem (I think) I have put Open Office up so that I can help a friend who has just bought a new computer with Open Office installed. His looks the way I expected mine to be. Good icons on the desktop. All I have is a small icon on the taskbar (btm rh side). It goes to "quickaccess" or something, but vanished overnight and I had to re install everything to get it back. I wonder if I could copy this icon to the desktop - HOW?

I looked into my OFFICE files and discovered that OFFICE enables me to input todays date by using Ctrl/shift/; in other words one more keystroke than MSWORKS needs. But this doesn't work in OPEN OFFICE which I thought was compatible.
Comment please.

553730 2007-05-30 02:36:00 "Compatible" doesn't mean "exactly the same, in all respects". Imagine the slavering of the Microsoft lawyers if this was the case. Basically, I think it means: "can use files from, and create files usable by, the other one".

I'd browse and use any search tool on that documentation (documentation.openoffice.org) site.
