553444 2007-05-26 11:53:00 My ASUS DRW-1612BL takes about 35 minutes to burn an 8x single layer imation dvd. Or a 16x dvd. Or a 2x dvd.

It used to take about 10 minutes give or take to burn a single layer 8x imation dvd. But about a week ago my mate gave me a crappy DSE 2x dvd-rw to burn some stuff for him. It took FOREVER. It had to format the dvd etc etc. But now, ever since then no matter how good the dvd I use it takes 35 minutes.

Instead of the buffer staying at 98% - 100% it jumps up and down, from 100%ish to 50%ish and back again. Does this have anything to do with it?
I use Nero 7 Ultra edition.

Please help it's so frustrating burning good discs that slow.

Cheers.

553447 2007-05-26 21:43:00 Have a look in the Device Manager under IDE/ATAPI Controllers.
Find the Channel that the DVD writer is attached too (Most likely Secondary IDE Channel) and double-click it.
Go to the Advanced tab and make sure that the Trasfer Mode is set to DMA if available.
It is probably set to PIO Only, which is the old slow transfer mode.
Windows will automatically switch the drive to this mode if it has trouble reading or writing to a disc.

553448 2007-05-27 00:48:00 Hey,
In device manager one if the IDE Controllers was set to PIO only so I changed it to DMA if available. Except it's still going as slow as before. Under where it says transfer mode (which now says DMA) it says Current transfer mode. That is set to PIO mode. (I attached a pic at the bottom) But I can't change that setting. I tried rebooting my computer after changing the transfer mode to DMA but no luck. The current transfer mode it still PIO. Is that what will be causing it to still go slow?

553449 2007-05-27 01:01:00 Thats why its going slow. It should be on Ultra DMA Mode 4 or 5.

Not PIO.

I would change the IDE cable you're using and preferably use one with a blue connector on the mobo end.

What else is on the same IDE connection as this burner?

The firmware for this is also up to 1.10 so may pay to update it once u fix this prob.

553450 2007-05-27 02:17:00 Download the attached file.
Rename it from resetdma.txt to resetdma.vbs (You may have to set Windows to display extensions of known file types to do this)
Run it then restart your PC.
See if that fixes it.

553451 2007-05-27 03:07:00 I changed the cable to no avail.

But that reset DMA thing worked like a charm. It now says under current transfer mode "Ultra DMA Mode 4"

Thanks for all your help it's back to burning discs like it was before.
