My machine runs an XP 2500+ which equates to about 1800Mhz, however my machine has been going very slow for a couple of months now and i had tried everything, when I looked in

Which confuses me completely does this mean something is set incorrectly, I did have to replace the clock battery a few months ago, and had to redo some of the bios stuff

553262 2007-05-26 05:22:00 Its not like clockwork where a spring runs down.
It will be software.

Especailly if its running Winxp.
Declutter it, use something like CCleaner, remove unnecessary items form startup, clear out the restore points.

And check for spyware, thats usually a cause too.
Spybot, AdAwar SE Personal and Hijackthis for starters.

Post the Hijackthis log here for Speedy to view.

Your computer is underclocked. When you reset some stuff in the BIOS, the CPU multiplier must of been changed. I am guessing the 200 for your FSB is correct, so you need to change the multiplier to 9 x 200 (=1800)

553264 2007-05-26 06:53:00 I had the same problem with my Sempron 64 3000+, I decided to try CPU-Z one day and found that my CPU was going at 1ghz (instead of 1.8)

I went on bumping up the CPU multiplier in segments incase the computer had clocked it down, I got to 8.5x giving me 1.7ghz...then when I tried to go to 9x to give me 1.8ghz the bios reset the speed to 5x and 1ghz.

I found that the CPU voltage was set to "automatic" and was higher than it should be (ment to be 1.4v and was closer to 1.5v) so I set it to manual and bumped the voltage back down to 1.4v and it happily went to 1.8ghz (and over...but I put it back, wasn't interested in over clocking it).

So if yours keeps changing away from 9x 200mhz (1.8ghz) then have a look at where your voltage should be.

Moral of the story: Don't let your computer control itself. lol

Hi PcTek

I don't believe it is software as I have done all of your suggestions a number of times in the past, (apart from posting the spybot thing, but whenever I have checked it there has been nothing wrong with it)

Hi Jen

Cheers for that

I am really lost with this set up

according to what I have read
the 2500+ has a FSB of 333
and the board supports 400 / 333 / 266 / 200 MHz
and my Ram is 256 MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM

the thing is that what I have read is that the multiplier should be 11

and from memory the CPUs MHz was 1833 (which all the websites seem to say it is) not the 1800 I had stated earlier, so sorry for giving the wrong info

I am utterly baffled by it all I have to say

Underclocked or not, its not going to make a noticable slowdown over a few months.

The other thing is to do a fresh install of Windows.

553267 2007-05-26 08:24:00 guys...... it loks like this pc is well and truly underclocked. the ram is set to 200 instead of 333. the bios proberly reset to defaults. also check the ram, some bios will match the FSB to the ram. the ram could be faulty. tweak'e (69)
553268 2007-05-26 09:10:00 OK people translate this all for me

What should i be changing in the bios and where should I be looking
Morgenmuffel (187)
553269 2007-05-26 09:33:00 look for ram speed and front side bus (fsb) speed settings. they are proberly independant. most bios have an auto setting as well as the manual speed settings. tweak'e (69)
553270 2007-05-26 10:23:00 okey doke

so
i would set the ram and Fsb to 333, but what would the multiplier be

according to what I have seen it should be 11 which would make it 3663 rather than 1833
