553100 2007-05-25 23:24:00 What Adverts, using FireFox and the only ad it shows is the PCWorld Banner. Am just using the default settings. There is a 1 to 2 inch white strip down one side, is that where the adverts are supposed to be?

Just opened IE6 for the first time, same, no adverts, just the PCWorld Banner.

What am I missing .....? Sounds like not too much.

553101 2007-05-26 00:29:00 I have only one single line in my hosts file that relates to pf1 which is:

127.0.0.1 inl.adbureau.net

That seems to take care of all the ads for me....

553102 2007-05-26 00:31:00 There is supposed to be a banner down the side. I am ok with the one up top but the side one had to go. The white bar on the side completely ruins the forum structure.

Bit of greasemonkey fixes it.

553103 2007-05-26 01:04:00 What the..?? I disappear for a week and suddenly 1/3rd of the screen is taken up with ads!

A message for the website owners : read this thread and make a decision. Either reduce the real estate dedicated to adverts or reduce your traffic. It's a simple choice. If you read this thread you will see users are blocking the adverts anyway so that is what I would call an own goal! I won't be clicking on any of your adverts as a matter or principle!

What is it with you people and your obsession with ads, grow up.Everyone is entitled to their opinion Safari. Many people find them annoying becasue of their presentation method and/or the fact that they slow down the loading of the page... I do however appreciate that Fairfax can see an opportunity to subsidise this site and have every right to place whatever revenue stimulating options they see fit to place on the site - it IS theirs after all. So long as they don't EXPECT the users to enjoy the experience....

What does age have to do with having an opinion? :groan: Furthermore, what assumptions about peoples ages can you determine from the posts in this thread? Come on - enlighten us with your wisdom!

If your on Dial-up, it takes forever to load a page containing adverts.
If your on ADSL, it (the adverts) chew up your bandwidth quota.

Not only that, but any flash media adverts hog system resources.

553108 2007-05-26 03:49:00 If people have hosts files like the one posted, it's no wonder that multiGB systems are becoming the norm . To have that in memory for fast access . . . ;)

To have that as a time saver, it would be nice to have the host file sorted, preferably with the most frequently used entries at the start, though they will be cached after the first time each one is used .

Seeing this has given me a thought: it might be possible for sites carrying advertisements to stop the hosts file trick from working . I'd better not say how . . . someone might use it . ;)

I am on dialup and it works fine with all ads loading.
