Don't forget to check the library for the books you might want, as when I was trying to build my first web site, I went to the library and got out a book on web design for dummies, and found it great .

I thought it was senseless buying a book when I didn't know how much I would use it, and just kept getting out the same book until I had worked my way through it .

100MB of traffic ainent much at all. You are better to pay a few bucks, and get proper hosting, maybe with php and mysql where you can setup your own blog and forums or image gallerys.

All that advertising they stick on drives me nuts when I have the misfortune to visit a geocities website . Geocities websites also don't rank well in google .

553422 2007-05-27 12:10:00 http://www.ifastnet.com/ is a very good free host but you must have more than x amount of unique visits a month or they'll remove you, fair enough with php, mysql and no banner ads all for free

* 300 MB free web space
* 30 GB free monthy traffic
* PHP scripting support
* Free MySQL database
* No file size limitations
* No forum posting required
* Instant activation

553423 2007-05-27 22:23:00 Although MS Frontpage 2003 is not a great professional tool it's ideal for beginners. You may be able to pick up a cheap copy on Trademe now that it's obsolete. Or Dick Smiths may still have the Academic version for non-commercial use.

A great book for getting started with Frontpage is Microsoft Office Frontpage 2003 Quicksteps:
www.amazon.co.uk
which you should be able to pick up from Whitcoulls or Book 'n More etc, for about $30.

MS Expression (replaced Frontpage) and Dreamweaver are the best programs available by far, but they're expensive and they have a steep learning curve, especially if you're unfamiliar with scripting HTML and CSS.

NVu is OK but has limitations.

If you go slightly beyond really basic or if you create a site with more than 6 or 8 pages you'll want to use DWTs (dynamic web templates). These are templates which allow you to have a part or parts of your pages common across the site. Your banner and navigation for instance. You can make changes to the template and update dozens or hundreds of pages in one hit.

NVu and other free or cheap programs don't support this. Frontpage 2003 does.

Web building can become addictive. :-) So if you buy Frontpage and learn some HTML and CSS - it's not too difficult - later you can upgrade to MS Expression at a reasonable price if you get hooked.

I started about 18 months ago with Frontpage, no knowledge at all and the book I recommended. I had a site up and running in a couple of days and I'm no über-geek.

Here's my first site, all created initially with Frontpage:
www.mistywindow.com
As I've become more knowledgeable it's been tweaked a little to be more compliant with the latest web standards but the original was basically the same layout and function.

Here's a smaller one created purely with Frontpage 2003:

Just one thing to keep in mind with Frontpage. Your host needs to support Frontpage Extensions - most do.

I use Bluehost http://www.bluehost.com/ as a host. Like most American based hosts it is dirt cheap and provides enormous amounts of storage and bandwidth. Kiwi hosts are extortionately expensive.

Have fun Peterver.

I think orcon provides free life time hosting, or at least they did, and you didn't need to be an orcon cutomer. Many isps also give free hosting space, such as slingshot.

Talk about overselling and probably false advertsing. 350 Gigabytes of diskspace, yeah right, I mean a whole harddrive is about that size, I am sure that if you came even close to using that much diskspace they would tell you to use another provider.
