553554 2007-05-27 10:17:00 Can anyone recommend a replacement modem for a PC that is too far out in country to have broadband and the phone line has typical rural electric fence click/noise and other noises. Was considering a DSE modem, any comments/feedback appreciated. not me (11995)
553555 2007-05-27 10:20:00 An external modem that can deal with electric fences would be the modem to get. Speedy Gonzales (78)

553557 2007-05-27 10:39:00 Dynalink NZ were selling a external dialup modem optimised for rural use a while back, seems to be a discontinued item now;

you could try Trademe.

553558 2007-05-27 10:44:00 I have reasonable success with external RS232 hardware modems (have tried both a Dynalink and a D-Link), these are not "rural modems" but external hardware RS232 serial port connecting modems.

By forcing the connect speed to 33.6 kbs maximum, I can achieve double the throughput in data than by using an internal PCI modem.

In that location there are 2 electric fences audible on the phone line.

These modems should be readily available on the second hand market, but please avoid anything that connects via USB.

If you can get a Dynalink rural modem, they are the absolute best but have a high $ cost usually.

553559 2007-05-27 18:18:00 I can only concur with the others. For your application the Dynalink Rural Modem are the best.

A friend was fortunate enough to pick one up from a local shop for $100.

Seems it had been in stock for years and they couldn't sell it.

May be worth a few hours ringing around if you cannot find one second hand.
