553435 2007-05-26 21:59:00 Hi.

I have been using Windows all my computing life and have heard so much about Linux that I decided to give it a try.

I am a complete noobie and needs all the help I can get.
I have been around since windows 3.1 so please be patient!!

I have a spare PC around home and ordered the Ubuntu (Feisty Fawn) CD’s.
The installation worked like a dream and everything seems just dandy … now here comes the tricky part.

This PC as a wireless network card installed to connect with my home network.
I have tried all that I can read on the Ubuntu forums to get it to work and seems to stumble at the most basic levels.
Fort example: ndswapper is an application that is supposed to make it possible to use windows drivers for the wireless network card. I am unable to install ndiswapper!!
All the forums says – download it from here and extract it by …. HELLO!!! I can’t connect to the net.
So I downloaded ndswapper (on my XP computer) and wrote it to a CD … I still cannot install it.

Most of the forums are way above my current level of knowledge/experience … but I hope to get there and maybe one day I can even help someone else.

Is there someone that can help out there?

553436 2007-05-26 22:06:00 Hi Ockron,
Welcome to PF1. There are a number of Linux users on this forum who will be only too happy to help you although unfortunately I am not one of them.

553437 2007-05-26 22:31:00 When you say you can't install ndiswrapper, what do you mean? Is it giving you an error message? If so, what is the message?

Although I have never dealt with ndiswrapper or wireless on Linux, I am asking so that those who can help have the info they will require anyway :)

Thanx for the question ... I should have given more information.

I don't know how to install it?
I have run the command
sudo tar -zxvf ndiswrapper-1.99.tar.gz

It did not fild the .tar file to unzip/install

553439 2007-05-26 23:49:00 Thanx for the question ... I should have given more information.

I don't know how to install it?
I have run the command
sudo tar -zxvf ndiswrapper-1.99.tar.gz

It did not fild the .tar file to unzip/installChange directory to the folder where the file is. For example, if the file is on cd (and assuming the cd is at /mnt/cdrom):
cd /mnt/cdrom
then run your tar command

Seeing as how you use Ubuntu I would guess the cd command will have to be preceded by sudo (but as I don't run Ubuntu, I'm not sure)

Edit: and because tar will want to extract the file somewhere, you will need to specify a destination folder. Therefore I would run something like:
sudo tar -zxvf /mnt/cdrom/ndiswrapper-1.99.tar.gz -C /home/(whatever your user name is here)

553440 2007-05-27 01:50:00 I am not at my PC right now ... I will have to reply properly tomorrow morning.
I copied the file to my desktop in the hope that I will be able to install it from there.

553441 2007-05-27 03:51:00 If you can, have a look at this page monkeyblog.org
It looks like an easy to follow guide to installing things on ubuntu. be it packages or from source.

553442 2007-05-27 06:41:00 Copy the tarred file to your hard disk and unzip there - it will create a folder with the uncompressed files in it. johnd (85)
