553352 2007-05-26 10:36:00 Got a cool wireless wacom tablet. hooked it up to my laptop running xp. It is great for artrage etc but I really want to write on tablet into Word 2007 and have it convert the handwriting to text. Googling tells me this is possible but I need a clear set of instructions because I can't seem to enable it.
I have gone to -control panel, add or remove programs,Microsoft Office, change, office shared features/proofing tools/english proofing tools/and clicked optical character recognition modules-run from my computer.
I have added "insert ink drawing and writing" to my customised quick access toolbar. it shows in Word 2007 and I can access some of the menu items but to no avail because the "Insert Ink drawing and Writing" and pen buttons are greyed out.
The tablet is working and I can use the pen as a mouse.
This is so frustrating. I must be missing one (probably obvious ) step. Can anyone help me out please?

553353 2007-05-26 11:23:00 Although I haven't used a Wacom tablet for some years, I don't seem to recall hearing that they were suitable for Word:confused: , I am more familiar with Illustrators using them in Adobe Illustrator with Photoshop retouchers being the main users of Wacom tablets. That might have changed but I hadn't heard anything that would confirm it. winmacguy (3367)
553354 2007-05-27 04:19:00 Micrososft say the minumum hardware requirement is a mouse. I'd guess that a Wacom tablet would be a bit better.

Did Google find you this set of instructions (support.microsoft.com/kb/306906) from Microsoft?

I can't use anything like this: if I can't read my handwriting, what chance would a computer have?

553355 2007-05-27 06:41:00 Thanks Graham, no I didn't find those instructions. My googling skills aren't up to scratch obviously. I see that I was almost in the right track but not in quite the right place in the add progs system. *sigh*. I left my laptop at work tonight so I'll try to install the engine as per instructions tomorrow and will post as to whether it is successful or not.
Thanks again for your assistance.

553356 2007-05-28 04:33:00 Here's the search I used for Google (www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&q=handwriting+recognition+xp&meta=). ;) The link I pasted for you is the first one. The trick's in the keywords. A bit of practice helps.

Some of the other links might be worth a look for background, reviews, etc.

553357 2007-05-28 08:29:00 I borrowed a tablet from Metla some time ago. Overall it worked. Connected & 'talked' to the computer well.

My problem was that my writing is SO bad even a chemist cannot read it. The tablet tried . When working with Printing, I found it prefferred "Joined Up" writing. By the time I had slowly written better, I could two finger type quicker.

However, I will not 'knock' the technology. PJ:2cents:

553358 2007-06-15 02:35:00 it appears to me Word2007 does not support this? I went back to Word 2003 and the feature is there. jlzzzz (12326)
553359 2007-06-15 02:47:00 I think Onenote supports a tablet. I think you have to install this from the CD.

If you didnt install it, the first time.

That was my problem!!:horrified i couldn't write well enough for it to be able to 'translate' my writing. Great for mucking around in photoshop and other such apps though. Didn't have any issues with it talking to word 2003, but i don't still have the tablet so I couldn't actually double check it in 2007.
