554110 2007-05-29 03:18:00 I have been trying for weeks to install the drivers for my Brother MFC210c printer. I have got the files downloaded to the desktop but when I use Xandros Networks it just does not work. I get a screen full of garbage saying that it could not find this and that and to try apt-get. I have tried apt get with no results. I have tried dozens of command line as well. The printer works with Windows but I want to get it to work with Xandros. I have tried other Linux versions but my Xandros is the only one that will regognise my winmodem. Any ideas. Perhaps if any Linux buffs who live in Taupo I could pick your brains for an answer. I have tried Turboprint but they don't support this printer.

554111 2007-05-29 06:00:00 Google (www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&q=mfc210c+xandros&meta=) gives these links, the first one of which might be a success story. ;) The fourth one, "Xandros support" might be worth a look, too.

I gather that Xandros is an attempt to have a user-fiendly system, "just like Windows", which supports hardware it has support for. Unless the driver software you have is packaged in the Debian apt format, set up for a Xandros system, it's probably not going to be easy. You probably haven't got the development tools: compilers, etc.

If Xandros uses the CUPS (www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&q=cups+mfc210c&meta=) printing system, there's a HOWTO to install MFC210c on Ubuntu. That might help.

554112 2007-05-29 09:00:00 According to this list (support.xandros.com) your printer is supported.

What are the exact filenames of the files you have already downloaded? Did you download them via Networks or manually from a non-Xandros website? Can you copy (or take a screenshot) of the "garbage" you see when you try and install the driver(s) and post back here with it.

554113 2007-05-29 22:19:00 Hello Jen,

Thanks for your reply. I downloaded the following files from the Brother solutions site.

mfc210clpr-1.0.2-1.i386.deb
cupswrappermfc210c_1.0.0-1_i386.deb
brmfcfaxpd-1.0.0-1.i386.deb

I originally installed Xandros from PC Authority mag disc. It seems that from the info below that it wants the disc when installing the drivers. I have put the disc in both of my drives but it does not seem to use them. I have ticked the boxes in the "set application sources" menu.
Below is the "garbage" from all the goes that I have trying to install the drivers.

I think you will find many linux buffs very keen to know how you have support for a winmodem. This problem has been a major with linux people for yonks. The answer to yr printer problem may well be to get a USB - Serial adapter as Linux does not like usb printers and scanners but a serial connection will overcome this in some cases. When Jen says yr printer is supported I think you will find it is a seial version.

554116 2007-05-30 05:04:00 Further to my post above.Your printer driver is included in Xandros releases so I can only assume you are trying to get a USB one going. With a serial connection it will be plug and play.Serial leads are generally available at refuse recycling shops at very little cost as are older model canon printers that work with linux. kjaada (253)
554117 2007-05-30 11:15:00 What happens if you let Xandros Networks get the files off the internet rather than CD? I cannot remember much about Xandros Networks, but there will be an option to specify the source of the packages. It may not be working correctly because your CD was from the magazine cover disk, and they may of customised the packages on it to fit to their (size) needs. Jen (38)
554118 2007-05-30 11:33:00 FWIW, I tried connecting our old Brother HL1440 laser printer directly to Xandros Linux and had no ends of problems with drivers.
Then I tried connecting through our LAN via Samba to the Brother connected to a Win XP machine and hey presto!! It works fine. I dunno how (though I suspect Samba knows), but who cares if it works?

554119 2007-05-30 18:31:00 There is also the possability that your driver is allready installed and as stated above it is included but is for serial.Earlier linux versions were no go with usb kjaada (253)
