553927 2007-05-28 09:53:00 I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that I should buy a new PC. It hit me when I needed to copy some data from a client's hard drive and realised that I don't even have SATA. I happened to be making a few new PCs so I used one of them.

Anyway what I have now is a Celeron D 2.4GHz, 512MB DDR400 ram, 120GB hard drive, I just put a new DVDRW in out of sheer necessity, and a 9600SE.

If I got a new PC it would be along the lines of:

Core 2 Duo E6420 (and overclock it as much as it will comfortably go on stock cooling)
2GB DDR2-800 (cheap - Apacer, but I buy lots of those 1gb sticks and they seem to go pretty well)
Seagate 320GB SATA (cheapest per GB, perfect size)
I'll just take the 18X DVDRW from my PC
400 - 500W AcBel PSU (I always use these for builds, and they're great. The 400W has 16A and 18A on its two 12V rails. The 500W has three +12V rails and I can't remember the currents. They all have nice quiet 120mm fans too.)
I tend to use Asus motherboards, something P965 or 650i based will do fine, but I'll consider P35 closer to the time when cheaper boards with it come out. The only other brands I go for is Gigabyte (also pretty good) and Foxconn due to the significant price advantage (they make reasonable boards).

Do I want a graphics card? I'll probably put Vista on there, multi boot with XP if I have any trouble with it. If I got a graphics card it would be a cheap 8x00, eg 8500GT or 8600GT.

I hear all the time about price drops for Core 2 Duos in July (or was it June). Is that worth waiting for? I'm guessing it's when AMDs Barcelonas are coming out, so then I would have to decide whether to get that or a Core 2 Duo (assuming Barcelonas are in my price range, they're probably not right?).

I don't want to spend more than about $1000 (that sounds cheap but I'm going by my wholesale prices)

Any advice?

553928 2007-05-28 09:59:00 If you always wait till the next upgrade in chips or price drops you will always be waiting. Wait for july for price drop, then there will be a rumor of a new chip due out in september.
Buy what you need when you need it. if you wait it's only a want and therefore what you have will do:2cents:

I know what you mean, but I'm thinking of the big picture here (or at least trying to). I have a savings goal to take into account - I have the rest of this year to save up for a trip to America. I want my money to go as far as possible.

That means I don't want to be buying a new PC when I come back in about 18 months, and need money for Uni. I will want to buy a laptop then.

Also by July I'll have a better idea of how my income is looking for the rest of the year.

553930 2007-05-28 10:26:00 Invest the cash for new computer now and make do with what you have. Then when you get back from trip buy laptop.....simple! jferg (3232)
553931 2007-05-28 10:44:00 Depending on where you go overseas you could pick up a cheaper laptop and bring it back here. winmacguy (3367)
553932 2007-05-28 10:44:00 Wha? Use that money for a trip to the U.S. (not to mention, will end up costing more with hidden fees)

Memories like that is worth more than any computer.

553933 2007-05-28 10:47:00 then why buy a high spec machine?

get a 3ghz p4 or an a64 4x00 with 1 gb of ram, a 7600gt etc etc

should come in well under a grand

or you could buy while in the states.... cheaper there (dunno how it compares to wholesale though)

just remember, prices always fall, so waiting for "lower prices" never works because they keep falling, usually as your desired specs keep rising. personally i find the start of april to be good, prices seem to take a sharp decrease after the turn of the financial year.

553936 2007-05-28 11:11:00 good point, but if he's there for 18 months and the warranty is just as long no loss. motorbyclist (188)
