554388 2007-05-31 00:04:00 I found through personal experience that some of the older routers/modems I've had access to provide superior stability and sometimes speed. The only problem with these older/routers is that they don't often support DSL speeds over 7mbps but thats not really a problem yet.

The D-Link 502T is a heap of ****, I'm currently running an old D-Link DSL 500 and its bulletproof, I've only noticed it lock up once or twice and I've had it for nearly 4years.

I use to have a 502T and the one thing i noticed is that it got really really hot especially when being used as a router. I was tempted to rip it apart and thermal epoxy a heatsink onto the offending chip but lost interest in the end. From what I've read it lacks the NAT memory to route internet to more than a couple of PCs, are you using it as a router for more than one PC?

Linksys FTW :)

554389 2007-06-03 01:58:00 Thanks Peter and everyone else! Only use it for one pc but i guess if its on 24/7 then heat will be a factor aye? Going to ditch this silly 502T soon. Transfield came around again and found a faulty circuit between me and the local cabinet. The change was instant!!!!! My connection is now stable at a solid 4Mb/s. It hasnt dropped a single time since fault repaired on thursday. Was going nuts at the speed fluctuations! Now i will go back to ihug and ask for a credit. One guy even said to me.. "might be better to pay 149.00 for a "proper installation" rather than risk a possible 80.00 telecom callout charge" LOLOL Term_X (560)
554390 2007-06-03 07:48:00 I said to him... um i already have an existing installation but its FAULTY i dont need a "new installation". If this is the kind of information theyre giving customers in similar situations then surely some customers will be forking out unecessarily. Term_X (560)
554391 2007-06-03 08:05:00 Leave it on 24/7 it is not like they are power drainers... heat pft if you got a decent modem then heat will not be an issue... my modem and router are on 24/7 and they have never had an issue related to heat... infact my router has been on for 81 days and no problems (would be more if there wasn't a power cut 81 days ago... :annoyed: )... and that is between the modem and PC so it will bear most of the heat The_End_Of_Reality (334)
554392 2007-06-03 12:45:00 Billion are also _cheap_ budget routers, similar to the Conexant Epicrouters... and the DSL-302g

Yes, it makes a HUGE difference!

And I think its the RTA1320 or something like that which Ive got, MASSIVE improvement over a cheap router.

You'll know, the cheaper ones especially are prone to falling over during high-intensity transfer sessions, like bittorrenting with more than 100 open connections and download speeds of 200KBps+ for example.

However for regular surfing, rarely affected by a budget router

554394 2007-06-03 14:31:00 thanks chilling and reality, thats what ive noticed as well. now that im back on the high speeds, i noticed the adsl light of the 502t do some decent flashing at speeds over 200kB/s from torrents. definately going to suss another router

cheers for help guys

I've had a lot of trouble with heat, My RTA1320 now sits on a wire frame to improve the cooling. I made the mistake of keeping it on my Gigabit switch where it would overheat and cut me off. Since then I know of another person that has fixed their problems by allowing good airflow around it.

554396 2007-06-05 15:16:00 Porkster, you're not the only one, I had the same issue too (Pointed a tiny fan at it, keeps it cool, except I dont need to now during winter). Aside from overheating, they're pretty darn good lil routers! They dont overheat quite so much when under light load... I seem to give it a good run for its money ;)

Again though, that is to be expected, its still quite a cheap / budget router, albeit a TON better than the DSL-302g :D
