553937 2007-05-28 11:11:00 Metla, what about an international warranty which a lot of manufacturers offer now especially to entice business customers?

I agree with bob doe and Metla, go and experience the States, well worth it:D and then buy a laptop. Do you really need a computer between now and then (a new one I mean)?

553938 2007-05-28 11:14:00 I should have been clearer. It's not a case of "buy a new PC or go to America". And I definitely don't have my priorities messed up enough to put a computer above anything related to real life.

Both can happen. My current budget for the trip is 10 grand excluding the car I'll buy over there for the duration of the trip. Currently, it looks like I will have saved up that well over that figure by the time I leave in May 2008. A $1000 computer won't affect how much money I spend over there at all - only how much I have left in the bank when I come back to NZ.

So it is a case of when to buy a PC, not if. I do need a new PC. I do two things - sell PCs and fix them, and it's starting to get to the point where my old PC makes it harder to do both. That, and I just want a new PC :p.

It's just that I can wait, and probably should, for a few months. Then again, it's not definite, I might buy the PC and laptop when I get back from America.

I have looked into importing before, and my wholesale prices (not very impressive really, mostly comparible with pricespy or slightly lower) from NZ are about the same as buying from the cheapest retail stores in the US, even with this high exchange rate. So there's absolutely no point buying stuff over there.

Edit: motorbicyclist, I'm there for 6 months from May 08 to November 08, or at least that's the current plan. I might look into getting a laptop before I go too, it might come in handy.

553939 2007-05-28 11:34:00 When you come back and look into that laptop for Uni. I'd recommend you look really hard at a tablet. Plenty of choice already and by then Dell will have brought out their long awaited model. Many benefits from using a tablet at Uni. There are lots of sites online to tell you more but here are 2 I like. studenttabletpc.com/ and http: axe2u (12325)

Thanks for that. I'll definitely think about it though it sounds rather expensive. I'd be looking to spend about $1000-1200 on the laptop. I'd get a Dell Inspiron 6400 if I got one today. I can get them a fair bit cheaper than Dell retail, so a Core 2 Duo one would fit in that price range.

Hopefully by the time I come back the Tablets will be going for that kind of price.

553941 2007-05-28 18:28:00 The best time to buy a PC is always "next month".

I hate it when I buy something, and next month the price is about half of what I payed.

553942 2007-05-28 20:52:00 Nobody has actually asked this, but WHY do you need a WHOLE NEW PC? Does it still do what you want with no problems? (Except SATA) if so, why not spend even less money and upgrade it, get a better CPU, more RAM, a PCI SATA card and a 7600GT if you want Vista, that will run Vista fine...

You have never actually said what you use the PC for... you only need to OC if your PC is struggling to perform well and if you are acyually going to use that extra performance, and IMO you should never OC with the stock HSF, that was not designed to handle the extra heat the the OCing produces.

If you wait till next month, when will next month come? next month and then next month etc etc etc if you want something get it now :2cents:

553943 2007-05-28 20:59:00 you only need to OC if your PC is struggling to perform well and if you are actually going to use that extra performancePfft... You know you're lying :p mejobloggs (264)
553944 2007-05-28 23:45:00 Pfft... You know you're lying :p OK, so what are you trying to say? :p

What is the point in OCing and not actually using the extra CPU power that you get with it? there is none :p unless you want a higher power bill :illogical

On the other hand OCing gives a PC that little extra life... such as my PC and 7800GTX is struggling to play Test Drive Unlimited at acceptable levels so OC it and I can get better GFX :D

553945 2007-05-29 00:46:00 Oh... Needing the extra power is just an excuse. You NEED to do it, simply.. because you CAN :p

Come on! I bet you couldn't resist fiddling around just cause you had a mint pc.

553946 2007-05-29 01:01:00 My PC has been OCed since the day I got it mainly becaise I need all the performance I can get and couldn't spend anymore money on the PC at the time :o in any case it was almost top of the line everything at the time

Now end the off topic posts :p
