First off I would make the recovery discs so you can go back to Vista later if you want or if you sell the laptop.
There should be a program to create the recovery discs (CD or DVD)

Then you need to check Compaq/HP's website to see if there are drivers available for your laptop for Windows XP.

Then you need to have a copy of Windows XP and a COA / Product Key to install.

554236 2007-05-29 13:06:00 Hi,

I'm going to assume that you own Windows XP and have the CD. If not, you'll need to buy/get it first, of course.

If you only have one hard drive, in one big partition, you will need to partition your drive. Luckily, Vista comes with a good partitioning tool.

Right click My Computer and click Manage. Right click your hard drive, and click 'shrink partition'. Shrink it so that you have 5GB+ of unallocated space (10GB if you can spare it). Then, right click the new, unallocated space and click new basic partition. Choose NTFS if you have a choice of file system. The drive label can be whatever you like. Click next as many times as you need to, and finish.

Now, boot of the Windows XP CD and select the new partition you created when it asks you where to install it. Tell it to quick format with NTFS if it asks.

Now your system will be booting XP only. You need to re-instate the Vista bootloader to fix this. So, boot off your Vista CD, click Next, and then click 'Repair your Computer'.

Select Microsoft Windows Vista which should be the only thing in the list. Click next, and then click 'Command Prompt'.

Type in the following:

Bootrec.exe /fixMBR
Bootrec.exe /fixBoot

Close command prompt (or type exit) and restart the computer. Now, it will boot Vista only...

So finally, click Start, type cmd into the search box thing, right click cmd.exe, which will appear, and select the option to run it as the administrator.

Type in the following commands:

bcdedit –set {ntldr} device partition=C:
bcdedit –set {ntldr} path \ntldr
bcdedit –displayorder {ntldr} –addlast
bcdedit -set {ntldr} description "Microsoft Windows XP"

Then you should have a successful XP/Vista dual boot.

554238 2007-05-29 16:49:00 george12 has given you explicit instructions jsut follow them to the letter and you'll be fine.......dont worry about which o/s should be installed first/last or otherwise if you partition the drive as george12 has instructed this is totally irrelevant..... drcspy (146)
554239 2007-05-29 21:04:00 Hi!

To add to what george12 has instructed, you would need first to go into the BIOS and disable something related about SATA so that the Windows XP would be able to recognize the drive or the partitioning made by Vista.

554240 2007-05-30 03:27:00 Hi!

To add to what george12 has instructed, you would need first to go into the BIOS and disable something related about SATA so that the Windows XP would be able to recognize the drive or the partitioning made by Vista.

That would be changing the SATA controller to IDE mode, which makes it look like an IDE drive to XP. Most PCs have this enabled by default. You're looking for an option called something like "SATA controller mode" with options of usually RAID, Non-RAID, SATA, AHCI and IDE (usually two or three of those).

It doesn't hurt to simply try and see if XP can see the drive, though. If it can see it you shouldn't have the problem.

554242 2007-05-30 08:12:00 For this i need any drivers. My Laptop Model Was compaq Presario v3ooo.

You can download them here:

h10025.www1.hp.com

In case the network card / modem needs drivers to run, I'd download them now, and put them in your C: drive, where you can easily find them from inside your new XP installation.

Then just follow my instructions. Don't worry about the drivers until you have XP and Vista multibooting nicely.
