2007-05-29 07:09:00 | Can anyone help me with the best way to resize a jpeg file and change it into a ico file. Once or twice a year I see a jpeg that I think would make a good Icon. However, all the conversion programmes that Google has turned up are only for a trial period and I feel sure there is a simple little programme around somewhere thats Shareware or Freeware.

2007-05-29 07:21:00 | . . . I feel sure there is a simple little programme around somewhere thats Shareware or Freeware . Unfortunately, "simple little programme[s]" don't write themselves . Some of the people who apply their hardly learned skills to create programmes have very strange habits and desires, such as wantling somewhere to sleep, and even eating occasionally . Perhaps the Gimp, the open source graphics system, would do this . ;)

2007-05-29 08:35:00 | Starting at the top . Tried that Stu using Microsoft Photo Editor . However, whilst all went well and Fax Viewer could open it, once reassigned, to a desktop Icon the wheels fell off . It became unrecognisable? You must have lead a very sheltered life Graham . Theres literally thousands of giveaways out there, many better than the expensive professional ones . ;) Zqwerty, I downloaded that programme you recommended but there doesnt seem to be any facility for opening jpegs? Wonder why? Anyway, Im sure the issue will be resolved in the fullness of time . :D

It became unrecognisable? Thats good :), that mean your Icon is made (you arent meant to open it again, as the name suggests it will be an Icon) When you put your Icon on your desktop does it show up? (post a screen shot so we can see how it looks) |

2007-05-30 01:56:00 | Well, after crashing much around and making Icons that would only be recognised by fax viewer and were unable to be recognised if assigned as a shortcut I found a little programme called Imageicon 2 . 4 . :) Works a treat if all you want to do is a simple conversion . Problem solved . Thanks everyone .

2007-05-30 03:58:00 | Not all that sheltered a life, B.M. I've seen a lot of free software; and noticed that a lot of it is worth what was paid for it. Or less. I've also seen a a lot of very good free software. I use Linux. I downloaded a lot from Simtel20, when it was on the PDP20 in the desert. I've even put an excellent little programme up on a newsgroup myself (you won't want it ... it was to make a specific board work on a particular type of PDP11). My slightly snide remark was a response to the "there ought to be..". I see so much of this attitude that there ought to be infinite bandwidth at zero cost, perfect software for nothing, etc ... This attitude, and the complaints that goods bought at the lowest price don't work as well as the more expensive ones, or that the after sales service isn't perfect, becomes a bit tiring. ;) I did suggest that the Gimp (a fine piece of open-source software) might do it, at the cost of some heavy learning. :D
