556810 2007-06-07 04:02:00 Potentially stupid question... how can I shutdown services in Windows 98? I'm so used to XP.

My main PC is running XP, and controls the internet connection. My other PC runs Windows 98, and I need to shut down certain services so I can install MDAC properly.

Any ideas?

556811 2007-06-07 04:30:00 I don't think 98 has services to stop, so u cant stop any service. Speedy Gonzales (78)
556812 2007-06-07 04:33:00 Not a stupid question. But as I recall there isn't a normal Windows (98) option to do what you want. However a few registry tweaks will probably achieve the same thing - but don't ask me how! Greg (193)
556813 2007-06-07 04:34:00 try this (hod.isc.ucsb.edu), i'm not sure if it will be of help, i've struggled to find info on it aswell, and since i don't have a WIN98 pc it's hard to try stuff out. wratterus (105)

Thanks for the info. It could have just been my pc, but it made Firefox stop responding when I clicked on the help icon.

556815 2007-06-07 08:51:00 Firefox, e.g., isn't a service. It's an application. That's probably what you mean.

Why not start in Safe Mode? That shouldn't start any applications.

556816 2007-06-07 10:08:00 Control+alt+delete brings up Task Manager/shut down everything you don't want running by right clicking/ shut down(close) except explorer and a few others which I can no longer remember/you will learn which ones by doing it/control+alt+delete X 2 will reboot if you have shut down the wrong ones.

Look in start up and get rid of the bumf.

Get this to manage the things you may not want to run all the time in Start Up but at a later date may want to switch on again, this is useful for all O/S's, not sure about Vista:

www.mlin.net

Whilst you're there get:

www.mlin.net

Very useful, don't know why more people aren't using it to protect against those unexpected installs which add themselves to Start Up folder.
