556593 2007-06-06 05:59:00 This is all as reported by my friend, so I can't vouch for the accuracy, but:

She came home one day to find her PC screen blank and locked. She rebooted, and when the Windows (don't know what version) desktop appeared as though it was a brand new install - Outlook Express gave the welcome message, etc., etc., and she couldn't find anything else. After much panic and re-booting, eventually the system rebooted to the original configuration!

The only explanation I have is that somehow it created itself a new user and logged on as that and then eventually reverted to the original user.

Any ideas? Of course the story is probably missing vital elements which would explain everything, but it does seem odd.

556594 2007-06-06 06:08:00 A corrupt user profile sounds to be the likely cause, these seldom self correct though. Perhaps this one has for some unknown reason.

This is a timely reminder to have all data files backed up, as if a user profile corrupts, all data associated with that user can be lost.

556595 2007-06-06 06:22:00 A stuffed profile is all I could come up with. She did also say that later that day she noticed a car had hit a power pole down the street, so maybe that caused a surge as it cut the power. Tony (4941)
556596 2007-06-06 07:57:00 If the power settings were for the puter to reboot after a power failure, then there's more understandable reasons for this happening .

It's not a good idea to have the settings in that configuration in areas where the power supply is iffy . . and more so if there's small button-pusher-children at home .

I have a very stooooo-pid dog that likes to taste everything with her tongue and has been known to hit the big button on the front of my tower and shut things off too .

Just change the reboot/power options to take advantage of the situation at hand .

556597 2007-06-06 08:00:00 Any restart would not be the problem.

The file corruption would be caused on the sudden power loss, if the file was open or any background write activity was underway (indexing etc).
