556547 2007-06-06 01:18:00 I have an odd query

Amongst the things I do in my small business is to check a particular brand of MP3 players when returned as faulty . I fix minor faults if present or condemn them for replacement if a genuine hardware fault . This is rare I might add as 95 % of faults are cured by leaving the player plugged into the USB port overnight to give it a good charge .

However one thing I occasionally have to do is upgrade the firmware .

These players appear just like a standard Thumb Drive and the upgrade is done by dropping the files into the root folder .

I havn't had occasion to do this for a month or so until recently I had a player that I wanted to upgrade . This had charged fine, played perfectly and did everything normally . When plugged in it gave the normal "Bing Bong" as it was detected but did not appear as a drive so I tried 2 others . These were the same brand but different models, but still gave the same result .

I then tried them on a different computer and they appeared as 'drives' as thay used to do on mine .

I have 3 different brands of Flash drives and a USB hard Drive, all of which work perfectly when plugged into the same port or any other USB port on my computer .

When I looked at the device manager, USB Thumb drives appear as a USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE and this entry disappears when the device is unplugged .

When I plug in the MP3 Players, it appears in the Device manager as WINDOWS PORTABLE DEVICE with the make and model of the player underneath .

I tried uninstalling it but it just reappears the next time .

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

556548 2007-06-06 02:19:00 It sounds like Windows is assigning it a drive letter that is already in use.

Have a look in - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
With one of the MP3 players connected you should see it on the right hand side.
You can right-click on it and select Change drive letter...
Choose a letter that is not in use.

556549 2007-06-06 04:33:00 Hi CYaBro

Thanks for the thought and to be honest I hadn't considered that possibility .

However, while it was a great idea, it doesn't appear there sadly

556550 2007-06-06 09:02:00 Could this have happened after an automatic "upgrade"? Might MS be trying to make it difficult for people to copy downloaded MP3 files to these devices? :D Graham L (2)
556551 2007-06-06 12:19:00 Did they previously work in your PC?

I take it you're running XP? If not, you might need to install some drivers.

Yes it had worked previously and it is XP

No drivers are necessary In the past they have appeared just like any other USB Flash Drive. I have 3 different types of those and they still work fine

Bit of a problem

556553 2007-06-06 21:20:00 What about removing all the devices from the Device Manager Under 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers', restarting the machine and then it should reinstall the USB drivers for the ports then try the MP3 player again. CYaBro (73)
