557335 2007-06-11 06:41:00 The only prob now is the modem and whatever settings. K/Ubuntu seems to be picking up the modem, it dials and connects, u just cant go anywhere after that!

Obviously, I've put in the right username/pw etc.. And the DNS servers. What else am I missing since I cant go anywhere!What is the name of the application that you are using to dialup with? There should be logs for it somewhere.

I still havent got Kvirc to configure, since I dont know what file to get from the previous site I posted.It would be very unusual that you have to go to http://trolltech.com/ and manually install files. Does Kvirc appear in your package manager (synaptic?) and did you use that to install it with? What is the specific error message? Are you clicking on a menu item to launch it or via command?

Oh one more thing, I created a folder I used for drivers, now I cant delete it. How are you meant to delete it when it says youre not the owner, even tho I created it?

There are no other users on it beside me so whats the prob.There is one other user, root. Technically K/Ubuntu doesn't have a root account, but you are accessing the root power with sudo. If you right click on the folder and select properties, what ownership details does it show? Is this folder located in your /home/speedy folder?

Well, since I dont know what I'm doing anyway lol, I did it thru the network part where the LAN (the LAN is fine as I can get on the net thru the other PC here, which is XP), and modem settings are, and clicking on activate so it dials out . I can hear it dialling and connecting, but thats it, I cant go anywhere .

Nope not in Synaptic, when I last looked .

And No I didnt use it to install Kvirc, (since its not there) .

I dl the file from the site . Something about X windows or something, that appears in terminal, after I type . /configure .

I'll get the exact error when I log back into Kubuntu . Its something to do with this QT Gui Toolbox I think . But yup,since K-desktop was like 164mb to get on dialup lol, you would expect whatever Kvirc needed, to be in it as well .

I'll check this once I log back into Ubuntu later .

557337 2007-06-11 07:04:00 ... But yup,since K-desktop was like 164mb to get on dialup lol, you would expect whatever Kvirc needed, to be in it as well.You might. I wouldn't. How do they know that you want to use Kvirc?

The people who maintain K-desktop would have enough to do keeping track of what's needed for their package. They can't be expected to track the dependencies of all the various applications which can be used as well. Even if they could, most people would object to downloading much more than 164 MB, which would happen if the package included everything which might be needed for all the possible applications. And they'd never be able to keep up ...

I can hear it dialling and connecting, but thats it, I cant go anywhere . Hmm . . . well as I don't use Gnome (or Ubuntu) I am not sure if that is the correct way . I might have to fire up a Live Ubuntu CD and take a look .

Nope not in Synaptic, when I last looked .

And No I didnt use it to install Kvirc, (since its not there) . It is there, I just had a look on the package website - Package: kvirc (2:3 . 2 . 4-5ubuntu1) [universe] ( . ubuntu . com/feisty/net/kvirc" target="_blank">packages . ubuntu . com) . The 'Universe' part shows you need to enable the Universe repository to access it . Give that a go . It is much more straight forward than trying to manually install from source a package .

You seem to be doing very well with getting Ubuntu set up to your liking . :)

557339 2007-06-11 07:16:00 Ok this is the error for Kvirc. ./configure.

################################################## ################################# CONFIGURE ERROR:
### Can not find the X libraries.
### Make sure that X is installed on your system and try to run configure again,### this time passing the --x-includes and --x-libraries options.
### You may also take a look at the config.log file in this directory,
### that will tell you which checks have failed and maybe more about the
### reason of the failure.
###
### If you use an environment that does not require X support such as Qt-Mac
### you may try to rerun configure with --disable-x-support

And yup Kvirc is definitely not in Package Manager, and properties on this Intel-536 folder (for the mode) has Owner - root, File Group - root.

Permissions - Read for Owner, Group, Others, and thats it, and yup the folder is in the home folder.

Ah ok, I'll find this universal option now. Ta

Would I tick Universal Binary or source or both??

Yup, since I had a spare 20 GB hdd, and a mate sent the cds from Oz, (I didnt fancy dling it on dialup)!

I thought I'll give it a try, and see whats its like :)

I've been looking at the documentation for Ubuntu and dialup modems. Yes, you can configure the modem via the LAN networks thingy, but you may have problems. I would just use the Ubuntu dialup application called gnome-ppp as it has a log associated with it for troubleshooting purposes. See more here (help.ubuntu.com).

Ta Graham, silly ? but whats the command to delete it lol..

would you include the path too then like /home/Intel-536 (anything after this)? or will it delete it after Intel-536?

Ok, Kvirc has finally arrived! 18 mb so it says for the install (6 files), not as bad (or big) as I thought it'll be

would you include the path too then like /home/Intel-536 (anything after this)? or will it delete it after Intel-536?It would be best too, to confirm you are in the correct location and removing the correct folder.

$ sudo rm -r /home/speedy/Intel-536/
Enter Y at the confirm query.

rm = remove
-r = recursive (include folder contents)

Small tip: you can use the tab in the terminal window to autocomplete words (remember case sensitivity). Eg:
$ sudo rm -r /ho<tab>/spe<tab>/Int<tab>
