557081 2007-06-08 03:42:00 Got a homebuilt FIC mobo and an AMD/Duron 750Mhz, . 64G/RAM, NVidia, 1-40G HDD & 1-160G HDD .

Here's the problem . . . . .

If I ask it to perform too many functions . . it freezes . I just don't think I am pushing it too hard at all!

Ran a RAM test overnight on my bench . . . no problem .

It did the RAM test without outside ventilation, so I don't think it's an o-heat problem .

If it's on-line (49 . 2/dial-up is the max) and I ask it to also process some WMP files as background sounds and I open another anything . . zap . . I get a dead mouse and need to hot boot it .

Any thoughts?

557082 2007-06-08 04:16:00 what OS?

what do you mean by process some WMP files? are playing music or converting video's?

rhat other programs are running? AV, firewall browser etc ??

557083 2007-06-08 04:36:00 . . Yeah . . XP-Pro . . . just listening to MP3s while letting WMP and AVG Free run in the background (as a resident, not an ongoing scan) while IM'ing on the copper twisted pair for dial-up .

Funny . . I can do so much more than that with an older P-III/500Mhz, XP-Pro, 512RAM and the same security . . although it is on DSL . . .

I don't think dial-up actually hurts it much . . except for speed .

Ran all sorts of other tests . . the CPU isn't too busy (3-8% at idle)

557084 2007-06-08 07:39:00 have you tried leaving the dialup modem out and not going online then stress your hardware with the things you do on it? kennie (10559)
557085 2007-06-08 08:39:00 No..but I will..that's a good idea.

You think the D/U is a problem or a resource sucker?

557086 2007-06-08 10:09:00 :2cents: Possibly an IRQ conflict? Look in device manager>view menu>resources by type ( in XP ); modem could be conflicting with sound and/or mouse Interrupt ReQuests :nerd: :p
I think it is more likely with older motherboards, only 16 IRQs possible, later ones have 32 I think?

557087 2007-06-08 16:15:00 Here's another spot where my ignorance shows up...IRQs and Interrupts are the SAME..right?

Hearkening back to the olde days, didn't we call them parser requests?

My concept of them is that they don't include the keyboard or monitor but do mean any devices that communicate thru the bus with timeshares.

Maybe this system is overcrowded with hardware...I'll look this evening when I get home...but wouldn't there be a warning by the system that there is a conflict?

I've seen the modem/soundcard problem before where you could not turn off the modem for the soundcard would be about the last to shut down when turning off the system and the modem refused to shut down until then too....but that isn't a problem with this one.

BTW: Just where does this FIC/AMD board stand as to age and performance? Was it edgy or just a slug when it was new?

557088 2007-06-09 04:31:00 Its been a while since I messed with an old machine, and dealing with conflicts, but it usually wont bring up any warning dialogue boxes on your desktop if I remember correctly, but it should show as an item with a problem in your device manager list, with the above yellow icon. How you fix it is another question (remove devices? reassign irqs?), perhaps someone else can help more

Yep.
