557044 2007-06-07 21:43:00 Hi!
Great Mag, great Forum but my first time posting. First time running Security Task MGR. --- it shows two memory entries running that I don't understand. I've tried to email them for a couple days but their email contact service is down?! Hope you can help.
Name= "Hijack This 1.99.1" File= "C:\Windows\System32\nvsvc.exe"
Name= "Hijack This 1.99.1" File= "C:\Windows\Explorer.exe"
Does this make sense to anyone?
Thanks.

557045 2007-06-07 21:57:00 nvsvc is either part of the Nvidia driver helper stuff or a worm.
Either way you don't need it.

explorer.exe is the Windows Program Manager or Windows Explorer. It manages the Windows Graphical Shell including the Start menu, taskbar, desktop, and File Manager. By removing this process the graphical interface for Windows will disappear.

557046 2007-06-07 22:30:00 Thanks PCTECH,
I looked up nvsvc.exe & I know what Explorer is but what is "Hijack This 1.99.1" doing in the Name field?
When I refresh the screen in Sec Task Mgr I see "Hijack This 1.99.1" in the Name field of ALL the windows normal services (svchost, Winlogon, lsass, etc.)!! These Windows services are all shown as being started "from Hijack This 1.99.1".
I checked msconfig & couldn't find Hijackthis listed as a startup. AVG shows a clean computer. Do you think this could just be a Sec. Task Mgr. screwup?

557047 2007-06-08 01:34:00 I don't know what Security Task Mgr is, but I'm guessing it's a security package. If so, it possibly includes a programme called HijackThis, which is a great security diagnostic tool - highly recommended - and possibly your Security Task Mgr invokes it when doing a system scan.

Just my theory.

557048 2007-06-08 23:51:00 Thanks Greg,
I've done every virus check I can & can't find anything else to worry about so I'm going to uninstall Sec Task Mgr & forget it. (It ain't broke.). STM is a shareware security program that keeps surfacing (hey it's a pun) when I do Google searches for system file names. Hijackthis doesn't come with it, but I do actually have Hijackthis installed on my computer, so I guess STM doesn't like my computer.
Happy ending anyway, so thanks for your time & have a great day!
