558032 2007-06-11 00:37:00 I'm looking to buy 2GB of DDR2 800MHz RAM for my new computer and I know to look for RAM that the motherboard can handle.
What does CL 6-6-6-18, CL 5-5-5-15, etc mean? Those with lower figures are more expensive, so I assume that they are better.
What should I be looking for when choosing?
Are some brands better than others?
I'm buying for a gaming PC and may look into overclocking.

558033 2007-06-11 00:42:00 Latency..can your mobo handle 4-4-4-12? the lower the better. Somebody else can go into the technical side of it  If you are looking at overclocking i would look at Corsair. It may seem expencive.. but you will thank yourself later :nerd:

EDIT: lower the better assuming you are overclocking. sorry should have made that clear.

558034 2007-06-11 00:44:00 On the other hand if you aren't overclocking the timings don't really matter. pctek (84)
558035 2007-06-11 01:07:00 Thanks for those comments. Corsair is proberbly the first brand I was going to look at, any others worth checking out? av4tarnz (5829)
558036 2007-06-11 01:13:00 Lower latency is better for AM2 AMD chips, with C2D, its speed! SolMiester (139)
558037 2007-06-11 01:13:00 IMO these brands are some of the better ones, I would take Corsair and Crucial over the others:nerd:

corsair, kingston, ocz, patriot, mushkin, crucial.

558039 2007-06-13 09:05:00 I think I've narrowed it down to either OCZ 2GB PC2-7200 Dual Channel or Corsair Dominator TWIN2X2048-6400C4D DDR2 2GB PC2-6400, opinions anyone?
I'm considering building my new PC to overclock from the start (by adding CPU HSF etc). The Corsair RAM has a lifetime warranty, by overclocking does this void the warranty?

Corsair got defeated by Patriot.

558041 2007-06-25 07:34:00 I'm running the 6400C4D's and they aren't any different to the normal C4's except they have the flashy heatsinks which are of no benefit. I only got them because my preferred retailer mucked up my order for the C4's and got these instead so i got a good price.

I've had my 6400C4D's up to 460MHz or DDR920 and i believe they still have more headroom if i loosen the timings and increase the voltage. My northbridge is getting too hot and limiting my overclock but that something i deal with later.

Without knowing which motherboard and CPU you intend yo use for your overclock theres no way anyone can really make a recommendation. For example if you were using a E4300 then any DDR800 will do as your unlikely to max it out, but if your were using a E6300 then you may need to consider faster memory or memory thats proven to overclock well.

A couple of guys over at OCNZ are getting very good results with Adata DDR800 hitting around DDR1000 with 5-5-5-15 timings.

G-Skill and Super Talent make some awesome memory but as far as I'm aware there isn't an official distributor in NZ so any warranty claims might turn into a drama so be warned. Theres no need to go for Corsair if you want to run the risk as the G-Skill and Super Talent run the same chips and overclock just as well.

Otherwise Kingston, Crucial, Mushkin and OCZ all make some very nice memory modules, if you've got money to burn then drop it on some Mushkin you wont regret it ;)
