Having a look at them now - thank :)

558029 2007-06-12 02:25:00 Sorry bud, but there is no way windows explorer or a backup solution, will move 110Gb in 32min...LOL...The files are too small. I wish it could!..

You're probably right here - in which case the difference in write speed between tapes and hard disks for the backup stage will be irrelevant. The easiest way to increase speed in that case would be to reduce the backup size. This can be done by simply writing changed files to a drive (easily accomplished with decent software). With a tape you can't do this as easily as they don't support random access - you are forced to start from scratch whenever the changes add up to more than the remaining space as you can't reclaim space from earlier in the tape.

The cheapest form of backup is not necessarily desirable, and "a couple of portable drives" is not going to be enough. This is a proper backup system.

The auditors might want to have a look at any proposed system.

I have little respect for cutting down options based on preconceptions of what makes a 'proper' system. This is a small business of 30 people - the system is a proper one if it works for their circumstances. If they need to store data for years then tapes are probably the way to go. If they are only storing a backup kept for three or four days before an updated backup obsoletes it then drives would be faster and simpler to manage.

Another question is what would happen if the backup device broke? With the hard drives you just get a new drive for a few hundred dollars and back up on to that. If your tape drive breaks you could have to go for up to a week without the ability to back up or restore data using your normal routine before your new $4000 drive arrived.

A proper system is one that is well planned and can cope with widely varying circumstances. The medium is only a small part of a 'proper' system and by no means makes or breaks such a system by itself.

558030 2007-06-12 02:41:00 Just to clarify a few points raised above:
- we are 30 users at the moment but will likely expand over the next 3-4 years to approx 50 users
- we do a backup every day and at the moment run a 2 week cycle (i.e. keeping the data for 2 weeks before over-writing it)
- we would like to keep a 'snapshot' of the business every month or quarter (still deciding - may need to speak to auditors), not sure how long we will keep this data (again to be decided)

Good point re the back up system breaking TGoddard - so far with our tape drive this hasn't happened (touch wood!) but definitely something to consider.
