557817 2007-06-10 01:01:00 Hi guys, I got a small problem at work here.
We have a server acting as a DHCP. It gives out a 192.168.1.x ip addresses. A while back we got another internet connection for only internet purposes. The adsl router was configured to an ip address of 192.168.9.x and dhcp was enabled on this router. But it was no way connected to the normal network. After a while the clients on the normal network started getting 192.168.9.x ip addresses and we found that someone maybe by mistake connected the adsl router to one of the network switches. Well we disconnected that adsl router from the normal network. At the moment we have turned that router off.

Everything works fine but every now and than one or two of the clients acquires an ip address of 192.168.9.x. And these are normally the same clients that get that. So i have to do ipconfig /release and ipconfig/renew for them to get normal ip addresses.
So are the ip addresses cached on these clients????? If yes than would ipconfig/flushdns clear this problem? Any suggestions??

557818 2007-06-10 03:54:00 The address assigned to a client by a DHCP server is used by the client to configure the interface, then is valid as long as it's on, or until the assignment expires. If you have "infinite" lease time, I think it should be the DHCP server which remembers the IP address/MAC address leases to tell the computers when they are booted up.

I'd do a search for any "192.168.9" strings in files on one of the culprit computers just in case. ;0

557820 2007-06-10 10:55:00 Heres a pic of the arp from the command mode. 192.168.9.244 is not supposed to be there. I removed it using all the commands i could find but every time I reboot the pc, it comes back. I don't know if this is what is causing the problem!

Sorry about the file size. Was in a rush and couldn't crop it down.

557821 2007-06-10 21:00:00 You can delete it using arp -d 192.168.9.244
If it is coming back and a few machines are getting a 192.168.9.? address then I would see if you can ping 192.168.9.244.
Also when this happens do an ipconfig /all and see what the IP is of the DHCP server and see if you can ping that.

Another place to check would be in DNS on your server, if it has it, and remove any 192.168.9.??? addresses if there are any.

I had a look into the DNS on the servers but couldn't find any 192.168.9.xxx addresses.

Yup, i can ping that gateway (192.168.9.244)
Also under ipconfig/all
DHCP - 192.168.9.244
DNS - 192.168.9.244
But the rest of the networks settings is normal.
Damn!! Gota find out whats going on here!

557823 2007-06-11 23:06:00 Well if you can ping 192.168.9.244 then that router is still connected to your network and is also supplying DHCP addresses which will conflict with your server.
You need to remove this from the network or at least turn off DHCP on it.

I just checked the router. It has been turned off since last week and it was also removed from the network when it was turned off. i dont know if someone in the building has got a rouge dhcp setup or something.

I dont understand. I mean when i do ipconfig/release and renew.. i get the normal ip addresses. I mean if dhcp is running on the router.. shouldnt it give me a 192.168.9.xxx ip address again???

557825 2007-06-12 05:11:00 Somehow an ADSL router withw DHCP is still connected to your main switch. Unplug it. Do the rounds of all the computers, looking for it. Find whoever wanted Internet access. If they haven't found the new job, tough.:D Graham L (2)

 yeah I was thinking the same thing. Its gona take a day or two to do the rounds, checking all the computers and ports on every wall. And when I find him..... he better run like a b***h.
