1415306 2016-02-02 07:46:00 After trying Windows 10 last year and it not working as well as 8.1 on my Touch Screen HP Pavilion 23 I rolled back to 8.1 without issue and researched how to prevent Windows 10 installing or nagging me again, all good and changed the Windows Update settings to not download or install automatically. Things worked well for months and the computer was working really well after I had had problems with the hard drive needing replacing last year and back and forward to PBtech (who reckoned there was nothing wrong with it but eventually I convinced them and got it working again).

Now, this weekend I noticed that Windows Update has somehow changed its settings back to automatic and Windows 10 was going to install on the next reboot, WTF!!!!!
So I tried a System Restore which failed and crashed my computer which would not start, resulting in another trip to PBtech to get Windows 8 reinstalled again! They had issues with the licence key because it had been less than six months since the last reinstall and Microsoft thought the key had been used on another PC!

Finally got it sorted and back and reinstalled everything I use again (sigh).
Now I plan to just leave it working on Windows 8 and not upgrading to 8.1 so it doesn't start the whole Windows 10 nag and forced downloads again.

Now I would like to know what I need to do if I have to reinstall Windows 8 on my PC, sick of the downtime and handing over good money to pay for what I already paid for (a working PC with Windows 8).

Please help with advice.

Thank you and sorry for being so long winded. (Frustrated).

1415307 2016-02-02 08:06:00 Firstly, do you have an external HDD that you can image your system too? If things go wrong you can easily reinstall your system and you won't need PBTech!

Secondly go to Google and ask "How to stop Windows 10 update". How to Geek will talk you through installing GWX Control Panel, it works well.

Check out Macrium Reflect free.

.

Settings don't change on their own. If you don't want to be nagged, put it on no updates and DIY if you want any.
Split your HDD into 2 partitions.
Install Windows on C and everything else on D.
Then once it's all set up, make an image of C and store one copy on D and one on an external - not plugged in all the time, backup drive.

That way, if worse case scenario, you can reimage C in 10 minutes or less and be back how it was.

Reinstalling Windows is a bit of a last resort anyway, it has to be pretty stuffed to need that. Usually messes with it can be just fixed. Thats why you should use a real, reputable tech and not a retail shop.

1415310 2016-02-02 19:29:00 See Microsoft will now push Windows 10 as a recommended update but you still need to okay it to proceed

Having gone back to my old rig with Windows 7 after a Hardware failure and after using Windows 10 since last August, Windows 7 has that no frills clean look which most like

But it's a no brainer not to upgrade to Windows 10 as it will cost you after July

1415311 2016-02-02 20:22:00 But it's a no brainer not to upgrade to Windows 10 as it will cost you after July How do you figure that one out ?

The only time you will have to pay for W10 to upgrade from an existing PC is if you wait till after July 29th 2016. If you upgrade before that date its yours to keep, doesn't cost you a cent, NO fess will be charged.

From a British Site:

Question: I’m thinking of upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I’m told the free upgrade is only for one year, and after that you have to pay £80 for it. Is that the case?

Answer:You have one year from the launch to accept the free upgrade to Windows 10, so you must do it before 29 July 2016. After you have accepted the free upgrade, there is no further charge for the life of the device.

1415312 2016-02-02 20:56:00 like I said,wait till after July to upgrade and it's not free anymore(ATM) Lawrence (2987)
1415313 2016-02-02 22:09:00 Yes I have an external disc that I back everything up to daily, if I do an image to the same disc will it not effect my other data on the same disc or do I need a separate disc just for this?
I had already done the How to stop Windows 10 Update and it was fine for months, until Windows Update did change its own settings (pctek), normally I would agree with you but Windows really wants us to download Windows 10 so they likely sent something through in one of the updates that changed the settings, ok you may not have seen this before but it happened on my PC.

Thanks linw, Marcrium Reflect Free looks like a good option at first glance as it is now too late to partition my HD (would mean another install at PBtech).

1415314 2016-02-02 23:24:00 like I said, wait till after July to upgrade and it's not free anymore(ATM) Many people cant read because some articles are badly written . it will remain free for those that have upgraded BEFORE July 2016 .

Look at it another way -- W10 has been downloaded and installed on Millions of computers already -- What you are suggesting is that on the 1st Aug, all of a sudden MS are going to charge those millions of people or their computers wont work ---it would be suicide for MS to do that .

What will more than likely happen, and this has been mentioned elsewhere, is when MS offer some new features, you may have to pay for those - An example was with W8 & WMC, if you wanted WMC you have to pay $15 to get it, if you didn't want it you don't have to .

1415315 2016-02-02 23:27:00 You are just putting off the inevitable. You may of had a bad experience with an earlier installation, for whatever reason.
The current available version seems to be ok.
I have recently updated four different systems here to win 10 & they are all running fine.
Two of them were so old they originally had XP.
Initially had problems with one of them, but now they are running better & faster than they ever did.
