1415920 2016-02-11 20:32:00 Hi

I’m looking to host a gallery focused, non-profit website and was hoping to get some opinions on good hosts in New Zealand.

My requirements are fairly minimal, the most noteworthy being:

5GB – 10GB storage
A decent amount of monthly Traffic (bandwidth), suitable for a site with a small-medium user base
MySQL
PHP
At least 2 email addresses
Backup service (either included or as an addon) would be a bonus
Good customer service

So far I have been looking at:

Umbrellar (https://www.umbrellar.nz/)
Freeparking (www.freeparking.co.nz)

Any help with this would be appreciated. :)

NZ owned.

However no-one will keep your site backed up forever, usually it's 2 weeks.

ALWAYS keep an offline copy - and on at least 2 separate devices.
It's YOUR responsibilty to ensure all YOUR stuff is kept backed up and safe.

Most hosts, if not all, will provide at least incremental backups, usually performed daily. However this shouldn't be an issue as you'll obviously have created the site on your own computer which of course will be your backup.

1415924 2016-02-12 00:34:00 Backups shouldn't be too much of a problem as I will make regular copies to my local machine and also to another location (probably to a cloud storage service). Just having that extra protection from the host's backups would be nice for peace of mind.

Lot's of great suggestions so far, keep 'em coming. :)

1415925 2016-02-12 01:36:00 I've been using https://myhost.nz/ since June 2015, affordable plans, excellent support when issues arise. Local NZ based servers. Very happy with MyHost. SonicNZ2 (7884)

Could you tell me more about the support you received from myhost? How many issues have you had that required you to contact their support and what was their response times like?

1415927 2016-02-12 05:46:00 Any specific reason the host has to be in NZ? There's plenty of good options if you're willing to consider overseas based hosts too, and while the speed may be slightly slower for NZ visitors if you use a non-NZ host, it should only be minimal and I am assuming for a non-profit site speed is not critical anyway Chikara (5139)

I did some looking for overseas hosts and found some good ones, I was particularly impressed with SiteGround's support when I contacted them . They also have a data center closer to NZ than most of the other hosts I looked at which is a bonus .

The main audience for this site will be New Zealander's as the site will host a large number of historical New Zealand images . I'm mainly trying to find good local hosts to see what is available .
