559458 2007-06-15 04:53:00 Hi all,

We have just built a new home in a new subdivision. It is situated in an area surrounded by existing subdivisions, and not rural.

We have been told that we cannot get adsl, as apprently we have fibre-optic cabling and we need copper wires...

Is this correct? Are we screwed until new broadband technology reaches NZ?

I'd like to have some opinions, as it has taken them 6 weeks to get this news to me, after hearing that "it will be connected by the end of this week" for the past few weeks

559459 2007-06-15 04:56:00 Yep... screwed! :D same problem all over the show, telecom are running out of ports in their exchanges..... i don't think copper/fibre should affect it.. telecom have been telling people anything but the truth about why they cant get broadband right now.... pitiful!!!!!!!! wratterus (105)
559460 2007-06-15 05:13:00 darn missed the edit: They are currently 'working on it'... here in motueka hardly anyone in a new subdivision can get hooked up for BB at the moment. they rekon it will be 6 weeks to 6 months... have heard different things from different people. wratterus (105)

I had that happen when I signed up. :(
I was scheduled to be connected but when the time came for me to be connected, the port i was scheduled to be connected to had been taken, and there were no free ones left.
At least the folks at Xnet told straight what the problem was. (the guy was extremely apologetic when he told me)
Lucky for me a port came free in a couple of weeks.

Yes you’re screwed :( (This has also happened in a subdivision here Auckland in Botany Downs area, a few years ago (I still think people still have problems getting broadband there); in till Telcome finds a way to sort this out or LLU happens (which is going to take a while to do)

559463 2007-06-15 07:05:00 So you guys are saying it's not that the lines or the exchange are not capable, but there are no free ports at the exchange?

History: New house, completion date 1 June 07.

I arranged for a phone line and PDQ ADSL on 4 May, thru TelstraClear (previously with TC and very happy with internet speed and cost, compared to Telecom) to be connected 28 May.

Move in 1 June, phone is up, not PDQ. Told by TC that would be up in few days.

4 June, told that the phone connection was not finalised due to issues with the account. Discovered that disconnection fees had been added and not credited and overdue charges added, plus we still owed from last invoice at old house. Paid that and cleared up the discon fee and o/due charges.

Told by TC that PDQ would be up in a few more days, by 8 June at latest.

10 June, told that order to connect PDQ still not placed, and could be another week. Asked for dial up and told we will get 150 hrs free due to problems.

12 June, received letter and invoice for dial up ...

15 June, told that ADSL had been rejected by Telecom and to refer to Telecom as to why. Rung Telecom and were told that they need to field the enquiry from TC as we do not have a Telecom phone line. Pushed the matter further and told that neighbours (over the empty section alongside us) were Telecom customers and they couldn't get ADSL as the lines were fibre optic, not copper.

Spoke to developers and expressed suprise that no one in their new sub division couldn't get adsl if what I am told is correct, but they hadn't had any others say anything.

I used to enjoy on line gaming, too :groan:

I think you got the wrong end of the stick, it’s the lines what are the problem ;)

559465 2007-06-15 07:27:00 First the problem was getting NZ'ers to join up due to pricing and equipment etc and know when they do want to join, they cant. What a country!!! beeswax34 (63)
559466 2007-06-15 07:29:00 Just going on Wratterus and Sherman's comments about the ports, but yeah it seems like line issues.

Cheers
