558522 2007-06-12 21:53:00 Hi all,

A question regarding macs:yuck:.

I have a friend who is trying to play a bunch of .avi files using Quick Time on a Mac. (OSX) They wouldn't play (surprise surprise) so i said go download VLC and that will work, which it did. However she would rather use Q.T. than VLC. I can't find a codec/plug in that allows Q.T. to play .avi files.

I was wondering if anyone knows of such a plug in or codec, it's not a biggie.. and i expect to get a bunch of replys that say "screw quick time use vlc"

I expect to have to tell her that eventually, but anyone know of a simple way to get avi's playing on QT?

Cheers:cool:

I think I might get her to stick with VLC, that's pretty much what I had come up with too, I think she already tried the divx and 3ivx codecs.

Thanks.

558526 2007-06-13 04:49:00 VLC is good (Steve gave it a big mention at the WWDC) although I have never used it myself, I am currently running Parallels which has been trouble free and gets a lot of use since I am still using my old PC version of InDesign for some work i am doing.

Haven't tried using the additional codecs in QT for avi files though.
I doubt that your friend will change from OS X though. :)

558527 2007-06-13 06:32:00 I'm not using it myself, but Perian (http://www.perian.org/) seems to be what you are looking for. :) maccrazy (6741)
558528 2007-06-13 07:48:00 Yeah, I was gonna recommend Perian too. I use it and it just works, this meaning it adds DivX/XviD support to QT, so helps with FrontRow support for these formats also. sal (67)
