559580 2007-06-18 14:38:00 so he is a mod... even better... now you can do him more harm than he can you... moderators love giving it but hate it being given back.... get the email address of the website owner and moan about him.... you can have fun with this...

That is not the way to improve things.:)

Back out, and stay away from such conflict in the future. You will have a longer and happier life without it.

559581 2007-06-18 19:42:00 Yes you did explain it. How the hell is the average Joe Bloggs going to get your location from your IP though? Answer: he's not.

Stop over-dramatising things. Is it over dramatising? The average joe can find out anything he wants about you. Ask the right questions, tell the right lies. Create a simple website with just the right tool added to the code. There are many ways. Phishing, identity theft ... you must have heard of these? All ways of getting from you what people want

Haha, oh wow. Complete change of tune.

winmacguy may be somewhat over zealous at times (usually regards to MAC), but anyone in this world can teach you things at any time IF YOU LISTEN. Therefore roddy_BOY, I would suggest you pull that head of yours from your a$$ and watch more observantly. :)

559582 2007-06-18 20:36:00 Okay then. Here is a message. Tell me from this where I live, how old I am, where I work, what time I get up each morning, my visa card number and bank accounts.
Oh yes and none of this is on my PC that I am using so it will be very hard to work out unless you can read minds over the net.

If it was possible 9/11 would never have happened and the police would rarley have to leave their cosey stations. Not that they do much now unless it is to chase money by issuing tickets.

Although I personally don't have the skills to do it Big John, I can assure you that by a little bit of phishing a person with the necessary skill could leave a trojan piece of spyware behind on your PC that picks up your password when you enter it for your bank account - there fore gaining access to much of your personal financial information which would allow them to dramatically clean out your bank account, steal your ID and a bunch of other stuff. A similar scenario actually happened some time back on a bunch of PCs in an internet cafe in Wellington which was reported in the Sunday Star Times. It affected a large number of people who used the cafe.

That is why we have firewalls and antispyware software on PCs and why I use an iMac although there is nothing to stop me giving away my details to Mr Ulgubhana Lintheke from Ghana who wants to pay me $5000 for use of my bank account so that he can move his $10 million family fortune out of Ghana:rolleyes:

Look, the question was: from my IP, can someone obtain personally identifiable info. The answer given was yes, you can just look it up. That's where I called bull****, and now people are explaining completely different means. What's setting up a phishing website got to do with knowing someone's IP?

559585 2007-06-19 01:26:00 This thread was started by someone who got into "a stupid online argument". Unfortunately it is showing signs of going full circle. It contains some good advice about how to avoid that. Robin S_ (86)

As I said, anyone can try on mine and they would not get it. To get a trojan on my PC they would have to get me to run it first (and don't start spouting about backdoors in IE and other programs like that because I am aware of them all).
The reason they would not get the info is simply I dont dont give it online at all so what I dont type they cant get. There is no financial info on the PC I use to surf the web for stuff. Oh I know lets change my hosts file so that when I type BNZ web address it goes to Russia or something. Sorry but it is locked with security software that askes if I want it changed even when I use my own account to do it.

Nup, not convinced and never will be. Sure some people are real stupid and will blindly do anything they get e-mails to do like suspect e-mails from banks but I delete everything from any bank. All banks contact you by post with important stuff.

559587 2007-06-19 05:02:00 No problem Big John, I am not trying to suggest anything. It is just better to be aware of what is possible than assume that it will never happen to you. winmacguy (3367)
