559731 2007-06-16 20:12:00 Thanks, it is the annoying-stretch-thing I'm a bit concerned about. Will clearly have to give this some serious thought.

What are you doing posting at 3:30 am anyway on such a cold night?

559732 2007-06-16 21:44:00 by side, but my laptop that I use occasionally is 16:9 wide screen.

The laptop is good for DVD, but highly annoying for 99% of the work it is used which is MS Office related.

When working on a letter you simply don't see as much of the letter height wise on a wide screen.

Just buy a bigger widecreen monitor, and you end up with the same vertical height. ;)

t is the annoying-stretch-thing I'm a bit concerned aboutWith the few games I play, they either have a widescreen setting, or you can manually enter the resolution you want in the game's console. As for video, the aspect ratio of most DVDs is wider than widescreen anyway, so widescreen is obviously the better option. For 4:3, I personally don't watch anything worthwhile putting on fullscreen on my computer, but I'm sure there are programs that allow you to replicate a televisions "widezoom" function, which stretches the sides of the image more than the middle, so provided the people are in the center of the shot, their heads should be roughly the right size.

Personally, having used a widescreen for the last two years, I wouldn't even consider 4:3. Widescreen suits a wider variety of uses. :)

559733 2007-06-16 23:13:00 The only time you will see this weird stretching thing is if you cannot run at the res the monitor was designed, if you run at standard 4:3 res then yes you will see stretching. Rob99 (151)

This doesn't seem to be always the case. On my 19" 4:3 monitor I use the screen's native resolution (1280 x 1024) and a couple of progs I use a lot are a bit annoying. The cd label printer doesn't show the cd as being round and Turbocad has a problem with round objects as well.
My notebook however has a 15.1" widescreen and this runs in a native 1280 x 800 res and works perfectly for these same apps.
The widescreen is great for Vista as I like having the sidebar apps available and the widescreen means that I don't lose any screen realestate when using Office apps or Photoshop.
By the way SurferJoe, most decent widescreen HDTV's will automatically change format depending on the movie or program showing. If not, you can usually change the screen format manually. You don't have to watch fat short people, it's just that it seems that most people who have a wide screen would rather have a wide picture of short fat people than the black strips down the sides of the picture when its in 4:3 mode when they've forked out big bucks for a wide screen.

1280 x 1024 is a 5 x 4 aspect ratio, don't forget, so maybe that is why the cd in the label printer is not round.

Thats why in my opinion, non-widescreen 17" and 19" LCD monitors are the worst monitors, as they are even narrower (horizontal vs vertical ratio) than traditional CRT's/smaller or larger LCD's.
Personally, I couldn't go back to a 4:3 (or 5:4) monitor. I use a widescreen laptop monitor, and my parents have a 19" widescreen.
The only time stretching becomes an issue is for some older games that don't support widescreen aspect ratio's (most notably RTS games), But even then, games don't look all THAT bad.
And quite a few old games do support widescreen, although probably not at the native res of most modern LCD's.
