559814 2007-06-17 05:58:00 Pretty unhappy about this

I'll definately be looking at a more thorough data back up in future

Which is why we techs stress the need for backups over and over and over.
Before things go wrong.

559815 2007-06-17 09:50:00 Thanks for the advice guys... Pctek, I totally agree with you regarding regular backups. On my home network, I could really only back up certain things, as I was governed by my ability to afford suitable backup media. In the end, I had 80 G of backed up data which is still safe, however, some of the things which I thought weretrivial...were important to the wife! :xmouth:

anyway, seeing as I have lost the drive, I may have convinced SWMBO that we need a new PC  with a RAID setup.... I have this setup on my work PC, but I was wondering what you thought about a RAID platform for home use?

I have also prety much given up on the failed drive, and will be doing must more thorough backups in the future. I figure I'd be better off getting a new PC (with a new OS - as I have lost the OS on the original drive) and a decent back up solution than spend thousands recovering the data.

559816 2007-06-17 11:13:00 You could try the old trick of putting the hdd in the freezer, to see if it will free up, you may kill the drive completely tho.... feersumendjinn (64)

Yeah.. also try dropping it from about 1/2 a metre onto a solid flat surface, make sure it lands flat though!! if it's really stuffed (not spinning) unless you want to spend thousands on recovery, it's your best bet. i've had it work a few times. probably not a really cold freezer though.... getting it to about minus 4 c is as cold as youd want to go.:nerd: Good luck.
