559560 2007-06-15 09:45:00 Unless the message board displays your IP or he runs it, how could he find out your IP?

He is a mod on the board, that's how he got it.

559562 2007-06-15 10:07:00 Reminds me of the finale of Jericho....Hawkins got his location tracked, rather than his IP. qazwsxokmijn (102)
559563 2007-06-15 10:13:00 What could he get from me?

What have you got? I want some too!!!

All kidding aside, you are very safe.
If you are worried, download the threat, and keep it for future flame wars.

The chances of hime being able to carry out a threat are low, what can he do? Very little but moan and most ISPs get sick of this type of complaint and ignore them. He may try and get you banned from the site, this is a common trick of the brain dead bullies on the net.

So if that happens either fight it in return or reregister and send him a "nah nah na nah nah" message to rile him up.

So relax have a beer and dont panic.... there is hope... the sun will rise and if it doesnt you have bigger things to worry about.

Global warming anyone?
:p

559564 2007-06-15 10:15:00 so he is a mod... even better... now you can do him more harm than he can you... moderators love giving it but hate it being given back.... get the email address of the website owner and moan about him.... you can have fun with this... zcc (50)
559565 2007-06-17 04:03:00 The schoolyard is alive and well, even here. :groan:

Just don't respond to offensive postings. The offenders' "feelings" will be hurt more by your ignoring them than by anything you might say about them.

"Stupid online arguments" are stupid. Leave them to stupid people. Sadly, there are plenty of them about. Don't add to the number.

559567 2007-06-17 12:31:00 If he even gets close to calling your ISP, he'll get laughed at. Even the authorities have trouble sometimes getting ISP's to co-operate with them. This guy wont stand a chance.

By the way, can a DDoS attack be initiated through the knowledge of a IP address rather than attacking a simple website???

559568 2007-06-17 12:57:00 A few things spring to mind here:
1) Why were you cussing at him? If its got that heated already, you've lost the fight, no point in carrying on. You should have walked away sooner, taken a chill pill and come back at a later date.
2) "Track your IP" sounds like somebody who doesnt know exactly what they're on about. "Trace your IP" would sound more realistic, but chances are if he's a mod he has your IP and doesnt need to trace anything. No point in him bragging about it
3) With your IP, chances are each time your router reconnects to the 'net you'll be getting a new IP Address. New IP Address means that somebody else who connects to the 'net after you might get yours. HOWEVER: If you're on the boards, theres a good chance the Mod can get your current IP rather than just the one you were on when you last posted.
4) There is technology out there that can give you a rough idea of your geographical location based upon your IP. I tried it once on myself and it got me pinpointed to the correct building (Used Google Maps to change the GPS coordinates into something I could see). That site has since been taken down however.
5) So he reports you to your ISP, big deal, chances are most ISP's dont really care. They _could_ kill your account for you breaking your ISP's T&Cs but what would that achieve? That'd just piss you off and make you more likely to go back and spam the boards after you sign up at another ISP
6) If you happened to go back to the boards, it IS possible for a DDoS attack to be launched against you, possibly even just through ping requests. I got permission from a mate who was on a 2m/bit plan to try and kill his connection. I did it... no problem for him though, he didnt care, just re-connected and he had a different IP. Problem solved.
7) Pissing off a Mod is one thing, pissing off site admins is another. Sure, maybe one email from you and they wont care too much. If the Mod is a real prick it might even help. However: You were cussing at him, your credibility has gone out the window. No point in emailing the site admin, you'll just have 2 people annoyed at you and potentially hounding your ISP to cancel your account. Thats a hassle for you, 24 hours to a week with no internet while your next ISP gets you setup? Early disconnection fee maybe?
8) Re-signing up doesnt achieve much, that account will just be banned also. Its possible to ban entire IP ranges for a certain period of time too, and while I dont mean any disrespect, you dont come across as the kind of person who is able to make yourself look like you're posting from Belgium.
9) You should have walked away...
10) Yes, cussing is a punishable offense. Do it too much here, or cuss at the wrong people, and we'll give you 24 hours to begin with, maybe 48 if its bad... or if its your first post we might just make you re-sign up again as a new user, fresh / clean slate.
11) Worst-case scenario, they're an experienced Mod and you've been in-experienced in setting up your system. They scan your PC, find out your OS or router details, its possible to get certain details from your router if its been setup badly, same deal for your PC, some are exploitable. Im not saying I'd do it (I wouldnt, Im a nice guy), but I know of Mods who've gone and hacked PC's due to boredom. Even Linux machines arent always 100% secure, its OS independant, there's frequently new 0-day vulnerabilities out there that you can have your machine wiped out by.
12) Again, you should have just walked away. I'd take a break from those forums for a week and go back later on, possibly even under a new username.

Of course, what Ive said isnt gospel, Ive not even had time to go over it and re-read it to see if it makes sense :P I got to 12 points made thou in a single post so I think at least one or two of them would be on the money ;)

I'm sure this isn't possible. Do you have any idea how this could work?
