560989 2007-06-20 10:09:00 I have a dynalink RTA 300 with four ports and usually run a desk top and laptop through it with sharing enabled so I can update lappy before travelling.
Into one port I have a Belkin Wireless thingee which I connect the laptop through from other parts of the house using a wireless USB. When on wireless the sharing is disabled and I would like to be able to see and access the HDD on the desktop.
I know once I make this happen I need to address the wireless security to make sure it is protected, but what do I need to do to share over the wireless? Is it related to the sharing privledges set at the desktop?
I can print to the printer connected to the desktop over the wireless so I know I must be close to getting what I need to happen.

Thanks.

560990 2007-06-20 10:25:00 Could be a software firewall, stopping u sharing a folder.

Are any installed? And obviously u have to share A folder.

Are the workgroup names the same on both?

560991 2007-06-20 10:34:00 no firewall on desktop, but there is windows firewall on laptop, sharing works fine when laptop in on wired network, just not on wireless.
Can't even see the desktop when laptop is on wireless, but if I plug the laptop into the spare network wire (or the wire that goes to the bekin wireless transmitter) from the RTA 300 and all shared folders/drives instantly visible.

560992 2007-06-22 08:10:00 Have sort of solved the problem, if I connect the wired computers through the ports on the wireless hub I can share viz the wireless connection, just cant share through the ports on the modem.

This raises a new question - how do I know my wireless network is secure - how do you test this?

560993 2007-06-22 09:30:00 Get a packet sniffer perhaps and try and test it yourself or find yourself a very good hacker:D beeswax34 (63)

Your wireless connection will not be secure unless you set security. As a bare minimum you need set on MAC address filtering and WEP encryption.

For example see: www.aeonity.com
