560480 2007-06-19 00:48:00 XPhome all patched..
When set up and plugged in,the mouse lights up, but as soon as I hit the switch to boot up, the mouse goes out,I get a brief message on sceen,"No sync", and then nothing. The light that normally shows that the hdd is booting does not light up.Would this a hdd failure, or something else failing. I opened the case and can see the fan is going and there is a light on on the mobo.
Any help most welcome.
Thanks

Hook.

560481 2007-06-19 01:16:00 If it's the HDD you'd at least get a POST screen. I'd say PSU, mobo, or GFX card. roddy_boy (4115)
560482 2007-06-19 02:15:00 I 100% agree with roddy boy but add, that memory is also a possibility

Ground yourself, remove and refit the memory in case it is not seated 100%

Unlikely. A totally dead (shorted) CMOS battery would more than likely stop the mobo from starting at all.
A weak CMOS battery causes strange effects like the machine intermittently rebooting at random.
A mobo will boot up with no battery at all - it just won't hold any settings.

I think the others have it right - you have a crook graphics card, RAM etc. Try swapping these out until you get the screen to display something useful.

I'd start with the graphics card first.

560485 2007-06-19 03:36:00 PSU, PSU, PSU, - - did I mention PSU,
Smells like a crook PSU to me.......
Seriously tho - the fact the the mouse loses power as soon as you try to boot would indicate this.
If the RAM was bad/missing/dislocated you would get beeeeps from the mobo spkr.
If the HDD was crook you would still get BIOS post complaining that there was no HDD to be found..

I pulled the ram stick out and put it back in and away it went.

Cheers for the ideas,
