560866 2007-06-20 06:00:00 Once they are WDRM'd, they cannot be shared...not even with another puter on your own network ..and that goes for self-generated vids and music you might make for your own use with your own recordings made by you.

I don't have the whole skinny on the extent of what they can do or not..but as I see them, WMP11 is a trap for unsuspecting users and once they have it, they are caught.

Billy took versions before WMP11 off the downloads area..he's sleeping with the MPAA and RIAA now...so don't wake him until Google slays them all.

560867 2007-06-20 06:27:00 Fortunately nobody is forced to use WMP11 as there are numerous suitable alternatives and I believe that with the continuing success of legal online music stores that the controlling power of the RIAA is on the wane. winmacguy (3367)
560868 2007-06-20 09:30:00 WMP 11 DRMs all songs by default (unless they turned that feature off or something) which includes the ones you rip from a CD.

You can turn that "feature" off in WMP 11 by going to Tools -> Options, select the rip music tab, and ideally change the format in the drop down box to mp3 if you have an mp3 codec installed. Otherwise just make sure the box next to 'Copy protect music' is unticked. If the box is greyed out then the format can't be copy protected (which is a good thing).

On another note, if you haven't upgraded to WMP11 yet, there is a way to ensure you don't get the latest version of Microsoft's DRM technology (which breaks FairUse4WM - google it if you don't know what it does) yet still allows you to install WMP 11. Send me a message if you want details. It even has the added benefit of getting rid of the update pop-ups because as far as MS is concerned you have the latest version of the software.

Fortunately I don't need to "upgrade" to WMP11 and yes I am familiar with Fair use which is what Apple's soon to be extinct DRM is based on. I use iTunes so i have no need for WMP. I have followed most of the developments in the digital music sarga over the last few years. :)
