561285 2007-06-21 21:12:00 All my "intrusions" as above appear to be more trojans than anything- certainly not a virus- I just feel frustrated that when a Ad Aware scan is run I get the same "critical objects " and it irritates me

Effie, are you sure that trojans are being detected by Adaware or Spybot? They are pretty serious so if that is the case then Nortons isn't doing a very good job of protecting you . Next time you do your housekeeping report the results of those scans here or on the forum listing the names of those "trojans" .

My question to the forum was really meant to see if I could do without so many- I do scans twice a week, and houskeeping ( updates etc as well as scanning)- on a Friday

If you are constantly getting "trojans" then I would be questioning what sites you are visiting or what you are downloading . If you are just getting tracking cookies that Adaware and Spybot detect and remove I wouldn't be too concerned .

All I have on my machine are Avast and Sygate (firewall) and a rather tightly sewn-up Opera . Oh, and a Hosts file and a good number of blocked sites in Opera . My web surfing is rather boring, however, as 95% of the time I don't visit dodgy websites and even if I do Opera takes pretty good care of me . I also empty out my temp files, internet cache and cookies fairly regularly with CleanUp .

Whenever I do a full scan with Avast or install Adaware or Spybot once every three months or so when I'm bored, none of them ever find anything except maybe the occasional boring tracking cookie . This has been the scenario for several years now, on all my machines including the ones that the rest of the tribe use .

People who are constantly getting infected need to take a look at where they are surfing and what they are downloading if they wish to stay "clean" .

561286 2007-06-21 23:16:00 Hi Foxy,

I use FF as my default - and only use I/E for listening to music, from sites in Jerusalem, and the rest in the USA and UK . This forms a background while I use FF for all else, including;-
- On line Banking, Chess moves using two sites while playing 5 opponents,Google searches, two N Z nation wide newspapers, etc etc .

I have not visited any site ( sic . , porn and the like) - these make me sick - and I am not be precious about this:yuck:

I have just run Ad Aware and, since yesterday found :-
MRU list ( 7 objects)
Tracking Cookie > has TAC rating of 3, according to analyses of it .
one is my name @hitbox and another is my name @doubleclick . net
(I don't see any copy and paste facility in Ad Aware)

If you think they are worth further checking I would be glad to hear from you

561287 2007-06-21 23:21:00 Dont worry about cookies .

Any browser u use / site u go to most probably needs them or things may not work properly

Theyre harmless . And can be deleted with ccleaner as well .

Foxy One, I am a little surprised about what you said as I hold you in pretty high esteem as techno-savvy .

I don't see too many infections myself any more, but surely SpyBot should have better results than that .

Might I suggest that you MAY have a false sense of security? I don't know this for a fact, but it is strange to have such small reports from SpyBot like you're getting .

Most malware likes to try to disable some or all of SpyBot, and I suspect this might be the case for you too .

If SpyBot has been told by outside code to ignore certain things, then you won't see them show up as "found" or in your system .

I'd go to the ADVANCED MODE, and click affirmative on all the permission that warn you about destroying valuable things and then click on SETTINGS and then IGNORE PRODUCTS and just see what has been taken out of the discovery loop .

Do this with the IGNORE COOKIES too and then right click in a vacant area of the page (the white area!) and click on "DESELECT ALL'

Anything that has a check mark in the little box is telling SpyBot to ignore the presence of itself .

I bet you have Sidestep in there at least with a check mark in it's box . WildTangent is also likely as is any variation of CoolWWWSearchxxxxx .

I hope not . . but I see people saying they NEVER have any problems and don't really know about the toggles in SpyBot .

Sincerely, I hope this is not the case for you . . but it does make sense to check .

I apologize if I am wrong, as I don't want to be insulting anyone .

561292 2007-06-22 03:14:00 Righto SurferJoe, I should be outside enjoying myself on a beautiful day like this being as it is Friday but you've gone and whet my curiosity now .

I did as you said and there are two entries ticked in the IGNORE PRODUCTS and they are Cdilla and SideStep . Although I unticked them I am not concerned at their presence as Spybot ticks them by default being as they are "PUPs" . No entries were ticked in IGNORE COOKIES .

It has been a couple of weeks or more since I last deleted any temp files, internet cache or cookies and here ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/spybot . jpg" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz) are my results . :)

Those "DisableNotify" entries are legit as I turned them off myself and I am not concerned about the tracking cookies as they would have appeared after I disabled my Hosts file to check a couple of websites .

No sign of WildTangent, CoolWWWSearchxxxxx or anything else, as I expected .

Happy now? ;) :)
