560949 2007-06-20 12:17:00 10km from the nearest town, doesn't mean 10km from the nearest exchange

I live 15km from the nearest town, but I have an exchange 4km away, my speeds vary from 1.6-3.0mbps

Gasp looks good compared to the old satelite download/dial up upload.

Also Vodem would be a very expensive alternative, there are cheaper wireless services out there.

560950 2007-06-20 21:45:00 Gasp is only available in Auckland and Wellington.

Note: Wireless Nation has halved speed and increased install cost.

Or theres Woosh.
And I'd believe that speed, ignore Telecom they never admit anything.
Theres tons of rural people here getting complete rubbish dial up.

560951 2007-06-20 23:47:00 or you run a REALLY long lan cable from the nearest friend with broadband :D motorbyclist (188)
560952 2007-06-20 23:55:00 On that note actually, had you considered getting somebody you know nearby with broadband, and chucking directional aerials in? It would probably need a professional to install it though.

Those aerials/dishes can throw a network over 10km line of sight now.

560953 2007-06-21 00:20:00 lol it'd probably be only marginally cheaper than running 10km of fibre optic though

(just kidding, wireless is the way to go, provided it works, which it may only do intermittently depending on weather)

lol. yes probably. Here in nelson there is a guy, who, if you pay $1200 i think it is, will guarntee you to get wireless working over any distance under 8km, provided it is line of sight and theres no snow involved. (he provides equipment). Rain will cause problems though, if it's a long way.
