560454 2007-06-19 00:36:00 as part of googles web history you can save your bookmarks online

How is this done?

560455 2007-06-19 02:48:00 What did you reformat the drive for? It is extremely RARE that ANY drive needs reformatting. In the 15 years I have been doing IT support I think I have reformatted only TWO drives - and that was due to them having sector table issues.
Bear in mind that reformatting a drive does NOT erase past folders and info, so your bookmarks are probably still there - you need a good file recovery program to have a hunt and see what it can find - assuming the area they were saved in has not been recently overwritten by something else.

That's not free unfortunately, it is a trial version and won't actually let you recover anything. I have personally found it too unstable to be of much use, especially with larger amounts of data (it might be OK with this one).

I suggest, if it's important enough, look at getting GetDataBack, it's about $120NZ but will easily get your bookmarks back, unless they have already been overwritten (unlikely), which would make them 100% unrecoverable.

Don't listen to anyone saying you're buggered. Your bookmarks ARE most likely right where you left them, you just need a way to access them. I recently recovered 190gb of data from a hard drive using GetDataBack after the lady formatted it and re-installed Windows.

How else do you cleanly install your OS? del *.*?? ;)

Admitedly XP doesn't require reinstalls anywhere near as often as 95/98, but when you do reinstall, it's best to format the drive in the process to clean out everything on there.

In this case, if he had formatted and not done anything else to the drive the files could be recovered relatively easily. Since he's installed Windows back on the drive, recovery is much more difficult as the sectors that contained the bookmarks file may have been overwritten with new data.

560460 2007-06-20 02:21:00 exactly, "How else do you cleanly install your OS? del *.*?? " After a year when things start to slow down, and I've got countless reduntant files built up it becomes easier and cleaner to do a reformat and clean instal of everything...

I'd been meaning to upload all my bookmarks, but I had a lot going on recently and it just slipped my mind... oh well, bad luck... guess I'm going to have to spend a day trying to find all my sites again! :waughh:
