| 560523 | 2007-06-19 07:42:00 | Hi guys, I recently had the second optical drive I have had in my present PC break down. I sent it off to PCSale as it was under warranty about 10 wks ago. Apparently it is still at the Samsung service agents or some such thing but I am looking at getting a new one because it is so inconvenient not having one. So I was wondering if someone can recommend a DVD drive for me. I am basically looking for the ability to play/write all the usual flavours such as DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW etc. Also of importance is if someone can recommend and online NZ company that I can get it from, hopefully with better customer service than PCSale. Cheers, Paul |

| 560524 | 2007-06-19 07:53:00 | Try ascent at www.ascent.co.nz. Their customer service is very good and no one on this forum has really had any issues with them. Alternatively, try pbtech.co.nz, who once again are very good. | beeswax34 (63) | ||

| 560527 | 2007-06-19 21:28:00 | I have an NEC 3520 (www.nec.co.uk) if you're interested. IDE, Black, doesn't do litescribe or dvd-ram though but is an excellent burner. |

Have dealt with them lots. Have found them to be quick and friendly, havn't had to return anything though so don't know what they'd be like with that, but their pricing seems to be very good on a lot of things. Can't go wrong using ascent though. |

Cheers I dealt with them once and they were OK. However, after a few nasty experiences with others, I have gone back to solely using Ascent - they may be slightly more expensive sometimes, but they are totally reliable. They get a great rating from Consumer as well. I use Flashcards for um, flashcards, but Ascent for everything else. Like beeswax said! |

| 560530 | 2007-06-20 05:00:00 | Hey guys, Thanks for all the advice. I was looking at Ascent and spotted this (www.ascent.co.nz) drive and was wondering what you guys thought about it. It seems a bit quicker than the Asus models at writing DVDs but at the cost of not supporting lightscribe- although I am not sure I would end up using that too often, especially if you need special media for it. Do you guys reckon it looks ok? I had been looking at the Asus 1814 series but I think my mobo can only support IDE(its quite old). So that shoots that down I suppose. Cheers |

| 560531 | 2007-06-20 05:20:00 | I have had that Liteon for almost a year without any probs. Max speed isn't worth worrying about as even good media burns better at slower speeds. You can get ASUS 1814 IDE drives, I don't know whether they have any advantage. ASUS used to be based on Pioneer (NEC) drives but the 1814 uses the Mediatek chip like the Liteon. |
