562425 2007-06-24 10:43:00 im looking at getting broadband internet (finally) but im a bit unsure on which ISP to go with. with telstra they let you choose the speed then choose the data cap you want, but it works out to be more expensive then plans with the same speed/cap on telecom and slingshot.
I then looked at the telecom plan 5GB cap max download/128kbps upload $49.95/month (with toll calls thru telecom), but then I saw slingshots offer of 6GB cap max dowload/128kbps upload for $39.95 (with toll calls thru them).
But just today I was looking on the pc world forums and saw a number of post where people have been having problems with slingshot.
I looked at the Xnet plans and they have the same sort of thing as telstra, but are slightly cheaper. 6GB cap max download/128kbps upload is only a few cents more then the slingshot one, and they dont require you to have your toll calls with them.

Any ideas on which ISP i should/(and ones i shouldn't) go for (and if you think of any reasons why or why not, please tell me).

Also, if can any one tell me what brand of router/modems each of the major ISP's offer with them plans (i know telecom uses d-link and telstra uses dynalink, what brands does slingshot, orcon, xnet, ihug, actrix etc use?)

one more thing. at home we have a desktop pc and a laptop (the laptop is wifi/ wireless network capable). some of the ISP's offer you to purchase a different modem at a reduced price when you sign up. if i choose to pay a bit extra and get say one of those wireless modems with 4-port router, and then wire it to my desktop and wirelessly connect the laptop, does that mean both computer will be able to connect to the internet and connect to each other?

everyone's help is much appreciated :)

562426 2007-06-24 10:52:00 Welcome to PressF1 Sam Bos :D

At the moment the most poplar ISP with PressF1 is Xnet (There are quite a number of happy Xnet users here on PressF1, they may come out of the wood work latter on)

If I was you I would give Xnet a try & see if you like them as well.

ISP’s to say away from are:

• Xtra - (I am with them as well on Xtra Go Large & it sucks!!)
• Ihug
• Slingshot – as you already know.

If you want to know why I say about staying away from the above ISP’s do a search of PressF1 for those ISP’s & you will see what problems users have had with them.

I Hope this helps :)

562427 2007-06-24 10:59:00 I'm with Xtra but only because of their deal with tolls, otherwise I would probably go with Xnet. winmacguy (3367)

Yes :)

One thing to note about modem from ISP's is that they can be crap (although some times you can get a good one), so I would recommend you go out & buy one your self then you know it may work.

562429 2007-06-24 11:02:00 No, get your own router, a good one and easy to set up like Linksys and you'll have your pc and laptop talking to each other in no time. beeswax34 (63)

Xnet, for the reasons you have stated.
And they have a decent helpdesk.

As for modems, just buy a 4 port off Trademe.

Yep.. i would highly recommend belkin, or dynalink.. if you what the whole deal (modem/router, switch, wireless) for example this (www.trademe.co.nz)would be great.

I have been with Slingshot for a year and have had no problems at all. We used to have the 256/128 25Gb $30 plan but have now upgraded and am getting at or +/- near 2 Mb/s even at peak evening times.

By all means stay away from Xtra - aside from being overpriced, a friend who lives only two streets away from me gets dialup speed in the evening - serves them right, though, as I warned them not to get Xtra broadband and they ignored what I said!

[edit] It may be that certain ISPs are not good in certain areas, so if you can talk to anyone on broadband in your neighbourhood then that would be the best way to choose. Be sure the helpdesk is free and not $$ per minute.

562433 2007-06-25 02:09:00 I'm wit IHUG, always have been (10 years plus now), never had a problem (touch wood). I know IHUG supplies a DLink modem (same model as Xtra do). The wireless one Xtra offer is a DSL604T, which is a good, easy to configure unit.

I'd stay away from Telstra/Clear. Only because it take forever to get through to their helpdesk if you need them.

562434 2007-06-25 02:26:00 I'd stay away from Telstra/Clear.

Except for Wellington, Kapiti and Chch. I believe these areas have unbeatable speed and price.
